All,

Jessica and I headed out with my brother to search for some county markers today, and went 3 for 3. The first one was quite remote so I just traveled the last 300 feet to find it. It is a a very small cement monument that is along the Mullica at the Atlantic and Burlington line. You can barely see it in the center of the photo.

We did find a turtle in one of the swamps.

From there we traveled past the fan shaped bogs (Wescote Bogs) and searched for another county marker. That is an interesting area in the woods on the north side of the road that leads to the Mullica, where it is quite barren.

Jessica ponders a tree.

About 1000 feet away we found Burlington County/ Atlantic County marker #61. If you look closely at the base you can see the date which was inscribed into it by the person(s) who placed it there in 1935.

We stopped to photograph some flowers. As usual my macro worked poorly.

From there we headed again toward Atsion and found Burlington County/ Atlantic County marker #62. Steve and I searched for it once before with no luck. It is about 30 feet from the road, so if you have driven from Atsion to Batsto and crossed Constable Bridge, you have driven right by it.

Notice the lizard on it.

The date is the same.

And they put the #62 in this one.

Nice day wasn't it Guy? Good finds. Can you send me the topo of where Jessica was gazing at the tree? It does look interesting there.

PS: that looks like either a spotted turtle or a stink pot. The flowers were pine barren heather.

I knew you would come through with the name of the flower. I will send you the location of the tree in an email.

Near Mt. Misery
I know this area near the wescote bogs which is where Guy took the picture of Jessica pondering the tree. It is a very interesting area, one of my favorites. Barren is definitely the word. I'm not sure if there was a devastating fire in there at one time or if the water levels get so high at times they periodically kill the pines. When I first encountered this area about nine years ago I recall seeing charred trees but I can't be certain now. I havn't been back there in a few years. There is an area in there where islands are created durring wet months (islands seperated by 3" to 1' of water). Lots of vultures.

I do remember the other side of the river, across the dirt road from the bogs being interesting too, from bob bruneaus hike. It was long stretches of open sandy areas interspersed with pitch pines. Plus, did you ever notice how wierd the tributary river (of the Mullica) is just upstream from the bogs? It has strange black water, and the sands bordering it are very dark. Some sort of geological phenomena is going on there.

Yesterday must have been "Jeep Day" in the pines. We were heading towards Batsto and about 50 Jeeps passed us in a caravan going the opposite way. We then turned into the woods at Batsto and at Constable Bridge there was another group blocking our way. One of the men came over and made a few comments to my brother like "still too new" etc, etc. He then asked what we were doing out there and I told him surveying :)

He was nice enough and asked the rest of them to move off the bridge and the road, and we were able to maneuver around them and continue on with about a 5 minute wait. There was an old army one and a few Rubicons.
