Life is so very fragile, can't remember the amount of times I've stopped for a dip in swimming holes on all of the Pines rivers. While its no concilation for the family at least he passed doing something he loved.
Rest in peace.

To compare to this tragedy, I love to take a paddle on my own but I do have an issue that makes it a little risky. I don't speak on it much. I used to truly enjoy a day of quiet on the waters but nowadays I get a little spooked myself at times as to what the least little incident could take away from myself and mostly, my family.
It can be a bit overwhelming at times.
It is truly a sadness this thing whether or not the fellow was doing a favored hobby or not. I feel for his family. I opt of late to paddle with others and while I enjoy singular excursions, a friend in the boat can be a joy.

This really is a very sad inncident and I feel so bad for his family. I was surprised to read that he was an avid outdoorsman and former life guard. I figured he drove into a cedar stump but it would seem (from the description of him in article) that he was familar with that risk, and he was familar with the spot where the accident occured.

If he was found under a log 50 yards downstream he was probably driven there by the current.

I guess it goes to show that you never know.

I am trying to guess which bank along Batsto he would have DOVE from.

I also spend time alone in my canoe, usually on the Batsto, and I occasionally swim. Call it age or something, but this year I didn't swim alone. Although I cherish my "alone time" on the water, more and more I realize how fragile life is.
My heart goes out to his family for their loss.

The older one gets the more one realizes that it is not good to be out there alone. While looking for plants Bob has found places that will swallow you up if you are not careful. We have a system now of notification so someone knows where we are going to be if those places are on our agenda.

I agree that it's better to swim with someone, but, he was. Also, the time of the accident, did you notice it was pushing dusk? I would think he was near Batsto lake (lots of stumps), due to the time. A tragidy, none the less!

This is awful and sobering. I missed this article until today. Especially sobering considering our party on the Wading River Labor Day was considerably "spirited". We have a lot of kids swimming and the adults always check the area for logs and debris before anyone is allowed to swim. This tragedy has reminded me to take nothing for granted out there.
