TABERNACLE — Romil Limson is a relative rookie on the sled dog racing circuit, but he’s made a serious commitment to the sport and his canine team.
Limson and his wife, Laura Anderson, keep a dozen Siberian huskies as beloved pets at their home. Their brood includes 10 adults and two puppies that are kept at the private, on-site Ninkasi Siberians Kennel.
“It’s not a business, just for hobby,” he said.
Anderson also races sled dogs, and both are members of the Jersey Sands Sled Dog Racing Association. Limson said his wife introduced him to the sport soon after they began dating.
“I was hooked,” he said. “There are a lot of reasons for doing it.”
Since 2007, Limson has been actively racing on the circuit.
“I’m fairly new at this,” he said.
Earlier this month, he participated in the Fair Hill Challenge rig race in Elkton, Md., hosted by the Pennsylvania Sled Dog Club. He and his team, Tropical Ice, completed the seven-mile course in 37 minutes and 38 seconds, earning an eighth-place finish in the Adult 4-Dog Speed class, according to the official race results.

A few times, I have seen a team of sled dogs pulling a dog cart in the Mt. Misery area. It is impressive to watch, as the dogs pulled for all they were worth and loving every moment of it. I couldn't believe how fast the team and driver were moving. In and out of sight in very little time. It was very cool to come across while hiking.

I don't get up to Lebanon (aka Byrne) very often these days, but when I lived in Medford I would go there frequently and often saw the sled dogs in training. Quite an unexpected sight out in the pines!

Here is a photo of them running in the field along Atsion Road that Ed mentions above. This is from around 1978.
