All,
I have always wanted to learn more on the origins of Coyle Field, so while surfing the web tonight I came up with a few small tidbits.
Apparently Coyle Field was originally built as an airstrip for fighting forest fires, but during WW2 it was leased to the US Navy to relieve congestion at the Naval Air Station in Atlantic City, and used as an emergency landing area for fighter planes stationed there. Warren Grove was also used as an emergency landing area.
In June of 1944 the Navy awarded a contract for $12,910 to fix up the Coyle Field "rocket" range for their use.
Those of us who visited that area years ago may remember the large warning signs mentioning it was a military facility and to keep out. There are newer smaller signs there today, but they are not as ominous as they once were.

And I still would like to know what this was used for.
