I was thinking that but I never saw this color variation before.

Don't see many that color out that way Ed, I can see why the color variation would throw you off, Bob is right E. Gartersnake.

my guess is that its stained from hibernation.

Then the snake was not good at finishing the job. Unless Mickey scared it away before it could.
