Friend found this yesterday. I've narrowed it to a young rat or a northern water snake. Am I far off?

Northern Water Snake commonly mistaken for the venomous Water Moccasin which reside much further south
What snake is this? Bob found it under something and gave it to Jessica.

I use to catch them a lot as a kid but hadn't seen one in some time till last summer my grandson caught one in his yard.He swore it was a worm,his Mom swore it was a snake.I was called to come over and verify who was right.He seemed pissed that I sided with Mom but quickly forgot it when He realized he had a snake.He wanted to know what it ate.I quite quickly said little boys but he knows that I am an accomplished liar and would not believe a word of it

Can anyone ID this little guy. His is light tan and the spots are brown. He lays on my front step every morning. Maybe the rain brought him out? My wife goes out the back door and around to get the newspaper. I also have a young rat snake about the same size that's always next to the front step under a bush, but I know him. Don

Baby black rat snake.They turn all black on top and mottled cream and grey splotches underneath when they get older.

I have a yard full of black rat snakes just never saw one this brown. So the brown one on the step and the gray with a black diamond design on its back are both rat snakes. Sorry don't have a picture of the gray with black design one.

Black rat snakes are very very common around here,black racers look very similar but they have smooth scales and corns (red rats) have a Y shaped marking that suns from the neck onto the head.I believe our black rats down here have interbred with corns since many of them have red markings in them and we used to have corns down here but last one found was in the 1990's.I think the Black genome swallowed them.
