On Saturday morning at 8:00 i picked my friend up to go to the Pine Barrens, it was raining and i thought that the day was going to be a washout.

Our first destination was on Burrs Mills and North Firelane Road to take a pic of an old tractor that reminded me of the one at the Boot Hill Gun Club.

We then left the area and rode to Rt.72 East, i wanted to take a pic of a survey marker, i took two in fact plus the one from our last outing, well that makes three blurry pics of the marker, i will try three pics next time, the marker is located not that far from the State Colony.

It was then on to Rt.563 South to view another marker, this one we found rather quickly.

It was then on to Speedwell to view some sites there, i had permission from the owner Mr. Stephen Lee 3rd to do so. This is a pic of an historic sign at Speedwell.

We had intentions of viewing different locales but were stopped dead in our tracks by the dreaded Pine Fly, it was the worst that i have ever seen them this Summer, we were almost inhaling them, the Deep Woods off was not a deterent.

We then left for Jenkins to view another marker that eluded us last time, and it has eluded us again, we only stayed 5 minutes because i could not tolerate the multitude of cars passing by and staring at us, i would rather be in a more secluded setting.

Having time to waste we then decided to visit my old marina on Great Bay Boulevard, taking Stage Road, which is now repaired, we arrived on Great Bay Boulevard, passing the Indian Shell Mound, then after the first bridge i saw that the first marina has closed up shop.

We then approached Cape Horn Marina and i noticed that the first building at Cape Horn was half burnt. Arriving at Cap't Mikes and espying an old sight the Fish Factory i met my old dock owner. He said that the previous Sunday that there was a real bad storm. The Greenhead traps were demolished, lightning had hit the Tower at the Fish Factory about a dozen times, hail was the size of golf balls, and there was 2 feet of water in the store. On a positive note they are catching a lot of Fluke but the ratio is 20 throwbacks to one keeper.

After a few cold ones we left to go to Turtle Creek Road, on the road i took this pic of another old tractor.

Time now to return to the Dutchtown Bogs to find the underground Stone, as we were taping out the distance a pickup truck pulled up next to my Jeep, two people got out, the one man introduced himself as Fred Miller, i told him our intentions, and then he immediately uncovered the Stone for us. A first pic of the Stone.

A second pic from a different perspective.

I then told him after viewing the Stone that i always recover up things like this and he really appreciated me saying that.

We then left the area, passing Parkdale and on the way to find the Sleeper Marker we found this, whoever did this should be ashamed of themselves, this really gets my goat.

Arriving in the area of the Sleeper marker, and after a ten minute search, we found the marker, a tree was not far from hiding the location of the marker.

It was then time to go to our friend's house in Tabernacle to finish off the day with some refreshments. On the way we spotted this little critter who struck the perfect pose, it looks like he is molting. What type of lizard is this if anyone can tell me ?
IMG_0648.jpg

And finally we saw this, anyone know what this is, is it a feeder of some type ?

Arriving at our friend's house we pondered on the day, started out rainy, turned sunny and hot in the Pines, nice breeze down the shore, met two real down to earth bog owners in the Pines, all in all it was a great day.

You didn't get a chance to see anything at Speedwell? I'd really be interested to see the furnace site.

The dedication stone you found has been broken since at least 2004, when I came across it.

We were allowed to go to anywhere we wanted to, the foliage at the furnace site was too thick to get a good pic, the flies like i said were intolerable, i think they migrated from Boot Hill, as that was the bad spot for them the last two visits, i think now that late fall would be the appropriate time to return to Speedwell. The great thing is that no ticks or chiggers were encountered anywhere we went.

Bob

We saw that trap not too far south from the Plastic Bridge on Burnt House Road on the East side of the road. The Furnace site like we discussed is all his land.

Great report Jim! Did Fred Miller say anything else?

Guy

Guy

He asked us if we knew the locations of the other Stones in the area, i said that the underground one was the only one that we needed to find, he walked right over to the spot and uncovered it for us.

He also mentioned something about two concrete structures on 206 that he owned.

I forgot to mention this, but we searched and did not find the marker at Friendship, plus the one at Duke's Bridge, is the one at Duke's in the gully or on the flat surface off of the road on the East bound side across from the telephone pole ?

Also, what is the purpose of a PK nail ?

Thanks Jim

You should always look at my photo's on the NGS site before you go. They give you clues.

On the datasheets, there is one on the pole across the road from the marker at Duke's Bridge, i noticed them on a lot of datasheet descriptions, it usually said go for instance 67.5 feet Northwest from a PK nail in a telephone pole or from a tree with a PK nail in it.

Also you probably know this, but the marker on Rt.563 has chalk marks on the road leading to its location, and a survey stick at the old Esso location on Rt.72.

Besides the datasheets, this was my other source.

One other thing, whem Mr. Miller introduced himself to me, i said that this area is called the Miller Bogs, he replied no these are the Dutchtown Bogs.

Also i just found this, interesting reading, info about the Jersey Central 1875.

We have had this discussion before and I am glad you mentioned it. I have always called it the Dutchtown bogs; however, when Howard Boyd mentioned in his book that he found a specific turtle across from Millers Bog on 206 it was decided here that those bogs were called Millers Bogs. Now we can set it to rest that they are the Dutchtown Bogs.

Jerseyman recently gave us some definitive information on the origin of the name Miller's bogs here in Pestletown.
http://forums.njpinebarrens.com/showthread.php?t=5408&highlight=millers+bogs&page=2

Every long time local in this area considers the bogs at the end of the road in Pestletown as Miller's Bogs.

Mr. Miller also said that his bogs were in no way affiliated with the ones at Rockwood.

Jim

Well, I have surveys that say his bogs, or I should say the state bogs between his were part of Rockwood. In fact, Rockwood's property extended farther north than his property. He should know that.
