Stokes Road Question

Has anyone done the length of Stokes Road (the unpaved portions) recently? For the last couple of months, I've attempted various parts of Stokes road, but I continue to encounter puddles (some look like lakes), that I'm fearful of going through. If I didn't wheel alone, I'd probably attempt many of those puddles, but getting stuck is just too risky for the wife and I. I was wondering if anyone has done the length of Stokes Road over the last couple weeks and if you've attempted every puddle that was blocking the road. If so, how was the depth? Do these puddles have more bark than bite? I really miss doing Stokes Road (the last I did it was 3 or 4 months ago), but I'm really fearful of those HUGE puddles.

There's one puddle on Stokes that is legendary. Knowing I couldn't go through it on Easter 2003, I turned around . . . and promptly got stuck. A friend of mine apparently got stuck in that puddle later in the day.

Mind you, I do not drive any of the big time trucks that some do. I suppose that will make a difference. Finding the alternate routes is half the fun out there. :)

There is some cool banks on the waaay side from the swampy parts. You turn off Quaker Bridge Rd and they're right there. It's the a real nice part of the Batsto

... and it's those banks I'm looking to find again. I've tried both end of Stokes over the last month or so and I get so far and chicken-out.

Go down Hampton Rd (coming from 206) about 1.20 Miles Then make Right on to East Stokes. Go about 3 miles down the whoop-de-do reittled trail (I don't think there is much mud) and there are the banks. It's a cool spot to take dip in the summer and I guess it where you put your canoes in when you take the Batsto to Batsto.

Thanks. I beleive that area was pretty flooded/water-logged a couple weeks ago. You can get so far, then you hit these questionable puddles that I'm referring to.

Yes, just north of the field above the ranger station, make a right (going north). Nice drive, scenic, lots of puddles after a rain but no mud.

One of the best spots in Wharton is OFF of Hampton Rd. The RR Bridge over the Batsto

Thanks all. Is that RR Bridge only foot accessible or can it be accessed by truck?

You take a trail that stops right before the tracks. Then you have to walk through some dence stuff for few feet to get to the tracks. Then walk east down the tracks.

We did some more Stokes Road exploring today, however I still got to points where puddle depth was questionable, so I turned around. Let's see if I can explain. Going North on Quaker Bridge Road, we took the Stokes Road split towards the right. We went somewhere around a half-mile on Stokes and saw the cool looking "bathing pond" on the right hand side. We continued on Stokes for another 2.6 miles. This location is about .6 miles short of where Stokes would intercept with Hampton Road. At that point (2.6 miles past the bathing pond) we encountered one very large/wide puddle, with a smaller (but still large) puddle after that. We could see this second puddle easily standing at the first puddle. I'm really interested in knowing about these 2-puddles. Are they deep, easily passable for a stock Ranger, etc. Those 2-puddles (again, about .6 miles from reaching the Hampton Road intersection) are what's stopping us from doing the entire leg of Stokes Road, from Quaker Bridge Road to Hampton Road.

Thanks. I guess I'll have to give them attempt my next time out. THEN, I'll attempt the leg of Stokes Road from FR-206 to Hampton Road. This week, I'm expecting my hand-winch to be delivered, so I'll have a wee-bit more of confidence if I were to get stuck.
