How's this for a hair-raiser:

Of course, this guy was as dead as a doornail. Otherwise I'd never have got this close for a photo.
When I arrived at Pakim this afternoon, Forestry Service guys were all gathered around looking at it. It had a crushed neck - seems like someone may have ran it over. Either intentionally or unintentionally (maybe it was hiding under a tire, or someone just did not see it in the parking lot).

They mentioned that they have seen several near the pond this summer. So if you're around this area or hiking through on the Batona, may want to take extra care where you're stepping.

Unsurprisingly, the conditions are super dry. Water level is well below the spillway.

The cedar swamp on the far side would normally be full of water, but is currently the driest I've seen it.

We need some rain!
