Hello PB friends....
Last evening I crossed another event off of my "life list" by attending an something that I have waited 4 years to attend.....

The Lower Alloways Creek Volunteer Fire Company Muskrat Supper....mmmmm

Muskrat is quite tasty if you add a little salt and Durkees hot sauce, as it was recommended! The homemade sides are mouthwatering - pepper hash, pickled beets, potato salad, and fresh greenbeans and ham.

The dinner is served family style and everyone has greasy fingers.....but the best part of the eve. was asking the locals at our table to "please pass the rat"! :rofl:
Attendees arrived with coolers full of tasty refreshments and we did not.....shame :cry:
(Next year I intend to be better prepared)

For all the wild game I have tasted and prepared, this morsel has missed my list. Nice to chat with locals, discuss the history of the area, methods of harvesting & preparing the feast, etc. Not much different from my present homeplace. I'd love to get back to the area and visit Hancock House. We shared a dining spot with the woman who interprets the site and she is quite enthusiastic about her assignment. A fine reason to learn more about the heritage of South Jersey and support a worthy cause!

....a bit like dark meat chicken wings with more bones. Slightly different flavor (like rabbit). My guest was not as receptive to the meal as I and I admit that neither of us is a fan of fried meat (which is how it was prepared)....however it was tasty!

There was not much time to think about the details of harvest and preparation ~ the hot pieces were more flavorful than the initial room temp offerings.
It was the spirit of the event that made it memorable!

I've had rat and coon several times. Slow cooked in barbecue based sauces, mmmm mmmmm good.
Ain't too many things crawling around this world that can't be eaten with some proper preparation.

I was at my friends once whose dad was a taxidermist.My friend used to do the dirty work for his dad like fleshing and salting the hides.Once he was fleshing out a muskrat hide and had sliced a small strip of belly hide off that wasn't good.About that time his cousin walked in and my friend promptly flipped the hide strip at him which was of course wet and sticky on the flesh side.The hide strip neatly landed under his nose across his upper lip.He couldn't have been more then fourteen but immediately had an instant nice thick black moustache.You would have to know my buddy to understand:)

When I worked at the power plants at Salem, the "rat" dinners were a big social event with the locals. I would have tried one, but none of my car pool buddies would. Also, the plant worked us at all hours and I could never schedule to get to one. Someday...

I went a couple years ago. It was alot of fun. It takes about year for you to work up another appetite for "rat". We were drinking homemade blueberry wine, it goes well with rodent.

You rock. I have been at a get together or two in the big wood where I liked for the fair but was told best not I asked what it was. Some of those times remain an enigma to me. At Least you went in prepared for your dish. Brave. The plate picture did not exactly look appealing.
What's next on the "bucket list?" I suppose any old thing that can be cooked up in a bucket?

I think the rat looks tasty! I am going to a game dinner in a few weeks with a friend, from what I have been told they serve just about all wild game from the U.S., I hope they have some rat to try!

We had our first fricassee of muskrat while in Maryland, on our way to South Jersey. It was a unique introduction to our somewhat eccentric family for my son's fiancee, who had joined us for the trip. It tasted okay, I thought. What bothered me was the delicate little carcass, with its tiny ribcage. Picking the meat off those bones, I almost felt I should apologize. :)
