I remember once there were a few threads on this board about bluegrass in the pines and Albert Music Hall so I know there are a few fans of pickin' and stompin' on here. Anyway I got in early to work the other day and put on the bluegrass channel on the Direct TV receiver for a little while-meaning until everyone else comes in and says "Ugh...I can't believe you listen to this crap!?" 'Ol Rocky Top came on and for some reason I was thinking of the pines so I penned this semi original tune...

Wish that I was on 'ol Apple Pie
Down in the Jersey Pines
Worked all winter cuttin' down cedar poles
Summers at the gravel mines
Once I had a girl on Apple Pie
Pure as the white Jersey sand
Lost in the bogs one dark and stormy night
If only I'da reached her hand

Apple Pie you'll always be
Home sweet home to me
Good 'ol Apple Pie
Apple Pie New Jersey
Apple Pie New Jersey

Once two city folk climbed 'ol Apple Pie
Lookin' for the Devil himself
Ranger's never did find a trace of 'em
Devil took 'em straight to Hell
Can't grow nothin' much on Apple Pie
Way up high on the hill
Had to go down to the fields in Allentown
To get some corn for the still

Apple Pie you'll always be
Home sweet home to me
Good 'ol Apple Pie
Apple Pie New Jersey
Apple Pie New Jersey

Been ten years since I left Apple Pie
Why I left who knows
How I long for the feel of sugar sand
Sittin' beneath my toes

Just a novelty...I love bluegrass music but I'm hardly musically inclined and obviously can't write songs, but I figured what the heck. I tried to stick to the old standbys of bluegrass: tragedy, legend, :jd: longing for home, :( and of course a moonshining reference :guinness:

So what do you guys think?

I like it. Especially:

Once I had a girl on Apple Pie
Pure as the white Jersey sand
Lost in the bogs one dark and stormy night
If only I'da reached her hand

Only a North Jersey boy until May (Graduation) thank God! Then it's back to Hamilton Township which is still north to you guys but at least it's close to the Burlington/Ocean County lines-exactly 15.3 miles from the entrance to Colliers Mills: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=from:...28,-74.555283&spn=0.113226,0.219830&f=d&hl=en

I thought maybe I was stretching it a bit, taking poetic license with man eating bogs...lol

That was awesome, As I read it, I'm sitting at my desk in work foot tapping, head bobbing. My coworkers think I'm nuts! They'll never understand! (Kinda like my Jeep thing)

Glad you guys liked it...like I said I've always loved bluegrass and it seems just as natural for there to be songs about the Pines as it is for there to be songs about Appalachia. Another cool aspect of it is that bluegrass songs aren't just songs, they're more like folktales set to music so its kind of like you're able to weave history, tall tales, and legends altogther. Part of what I wrote sort of reminds me of how my grandfather would tell stories about what the Pines were like when he was growing up. I've yet to make a trip to Albert Music Hall but hopefully I will soon, I'd love to hear to hear the kind of stuff Sugar Sand Ramblers and the Bog Iron Boys play. Anyway, after such an unexpected positive reaction who knows, maybe I'll post something else up here again. :words:

We have another Jeff D. in the making :) Inside joke...sorry.

Anyway, it is much better than his. You may find someone else plaing it at the Albert Hall when you go there, and it's a hit. Bummer!

Hey I'd be honored! I'd play it there myself it I could...when I was 15 I made a half hearted attempt to play the guitar but I was more interested in actually being a rock star than practicing to become one unfortunately. I've always wanted to learn the banjo but never really had the time so who knows, maybe one day.

I have also not made the trek to the Albert Music Hall.
I have looked at the website and it looks like a great place.
If anyone is heading out there one of these Saturdays let me know
I'm working this Sat. but the following weekend is good.

I love Johnny Cash too Bob. Amazing legacy of work. My cousin got me hooked on his stuff.
I'm also a big bluegrass fan-Doc Watson, Bill Monroe etc.

Doc Watson...excellent guitarist. I know a bunch of his songs. Or his version of songs I should say. Good stuff!! Tony Rice is good also, but Doc is more of the real thing.
