The Skit Bridge is being replaced

by the NJ Dept of Transportation. There was a lot of heavy equipment at the bridge today, taking it down.

Reminds me. I went over the bridge spanning Springers Brook on the Hampton Furnace road today. i stopped to photograph something and noted the boards are pretty loose.

There was a nature hike planned before the Carranza ceremony, but they didn't know about the bridge.

Looking good!!! Thursday evening 7-19-2018. Interesting that the planks are butted together. The old bridge had gaps which allowed the water to drain. Possible skating rink in winter.

I'm not surprised the planks are being butted against each other. It's a lesson I learned building decks- when working with pressure treated pine that's normally dripping wet from the lumber yard, if you butt them, they will dry and shrink, leaving 1/8" or so gaps. If you try to pre-gap them, the eventual post-shrinkage gaps will be huge!

Good, that is a great shortcut. And Zack is right. Always butt them unless they are kiln-dried.

I've always had trouble with the verticals, they look upright here.

We visited the bridge this morning. Very nice. I can't find one of my old photos but here is a comparison with the two that I could find.

This one shows Jessica today and my brother obviously sometime in 1975. That is the first year I had my Land Cruiser and we were driving around as usual trying to see as much of the pines as we could. The photo was taken not with my camera, but with my friend John's camera. He most likely even took the photo. Even though the file name says 1_76 that was the development date and the photo with my brother was taken sometime in 1975.

Obviously, I had my 1978 Land Cruiser in this one and that is absolutely my friend John in the photo.

I find that in everywhere I go. Things as so different than years ago when logging and most likely fire kept the woods open. We could drive almost anywhere and have a good view which is hard to do anymore.
