A steady wind blows across the meadow surrounding Stan Sperlak’s unfinished, Amish-raised barn on the banks of Crow Creek in Middle Township.
The 16-foot-high windows of his future studio face the wide expanse of marsh, its salt clinging to the humid Cape May County air. Though it’s late afternoon, a half scoop of moon already is rising in the upturned bowl of blue sky above.
To some, there is nothing remarkable about South Jersey’s flat landscape. There are no dramatic cliffs, no jaw-dropping waterfalls, no endless prairies. But to artists like Sperlak who wander its coastal plains and wild places, this is never-ending canvas fodder.“For all the stereotypes about New Jersey, we’re really fortunate,” Cagno says, ticking through the list of its native features. “You really don’t have to leave South Jersey to find inspiration.”And contrary to the belief that, if you’ve seen one painting of the salt marsh, you’ve seen them all, Cagno says no two are alike.
