What's been anyone else's experience finding tiger salamanders in the Pines. For years I would find 1 or 2 in the same spot in Atlantic county. This year I visited too late and missed them so hopefully when I return early next year I'll get some good shots. This is the only population that I have come across and thankfully, the nature conservancy has bought this tract which will protect it from development, though not from collectors.

I've made attempts at tiger salamanders for the last two years without success. Either my leads are way off, or i'm doing something wrong. "warm" rainy nights in january . . . specific south jersey vernal pools. The attempt is to find adults migrating to/from their breeding pools. I know its also possible to find the morphs in late spring, but at that time of year i'm usually occupied elsewhere.

Do you usually look at a different time of year?

Tigers

I find them usually in april or may under cover in an area where the water table is usually high. I did not get there til September this year when it was too late. They have all been under 4 inches also, which I took as peculiar. The same area has yielded marbled salamanders as well... and kingsnakes, scarlet snakes, racers, ringnecks and coastals and Pines. I plan on trying in February next year during the first "southern" rain. Unfortunately, last time I found one, I was without a camera!

Yea, judging by the state of the debris in the area, it looked like no one had been there this year so I feel fortunate. If I find more Tigers there I will be alerting the state with my data and pics.

is this a good spot maybe?

Does anybody think that the old halfway clay pits would be a good spot to find salamanders at? I will try to get there and check it out.

I know a place in a small patch of woods right near my house. Tiger salamanders are the Giant orangey red ones with spots right? I have found them up to 7 inches years ago. I found them under rocks in a sandy little creek. Rocks that had about 1 to 2 inches of water risen up on it. Pretty cool critters. Never found one elsewhere.

Hmm I wonder what the one I found is called. Almost an Orangey Red with black spots and LARGE.
