I was just checking the weather online and they said conditions are favorable for the formation of tornados, which brought this question to mind.

Have there ever been any recorded instances of a tornado touching down in the pines and staying on the ground for any distance?

With that question asked, please be careful if you are heading out in the pines in these conditions. I know these storms are a curiosity but they are nothing to mess with.

Several years ago a tornado touched down at Four Mile Colony on Rt.72. I believe it touched down in the woods and traveled across the highway into the colony causing damage to several cabins.

Yes it did. You can still see some of the trees it uprooted on the other side of 72.

It's apparently a very active season, too. I just spent a week in Arkansas and I was stunned at just how many towns had sections that were wiped out.

Pretty incredible what one of those things can do. I saw the damage one did in Southern Illinois a few years back and it's just something you have to see to believe.
They don't only destroy personal property but they can turn a beautiful section of woods into an "ecological disaster area". The only thing I can compare it to is when you see a civil war picture of a section of woods where a major battle took place.
