Food plays an important role in Pine Barrens customs. One event stands out above all others, and that is Vineland’s Dandelion Dinner. Yes, we remain the dandelion (and eggplant) capital of the world! In its 39th year, the Dinner remains a favorite culinary venue. The event’s dandelion-based food was delicious, dancing was fun, and the company exciting. Belgian ales, paired with the meal, were the perfect choice for the taste-testing.
It was my role to collect wild greens back on the family farm, and this lowly lawn nuisance was a dinnertime staple - a Spring tonic of sorts. It brings me great pride that the daughter was this year’s co-recipient of its Agricultural Scholarship. The farm community is alive and well in the southern Pines.
