I'm reading Beck's first "Forgotten Towns" book right now. I was wondering is it still possible to drive the tuckerton road straight through. I drove it a while back till it turned into a sand road. I vaguely remember coming to a point that seemed like private property and/or a dead end. It was a couple years ago so I can't remember exactly what happened but I didn't get very far on that sand road, there was a gun club on the left I believe.

You can still go straight there and it comes out on Carranza. Then you just get back on Tuckerton on the sharp curve right after the Boot Camp.

The "Ghost Towns and Other Quirky Places" book has a detailed "tour" of the Tuckerton Road. I highly suggest you pick up a copy.
I just got a copy, so far it's very good. One question, though. Is the road passable for 2 wheel drive? I don't have 4WD, I have a 2WD Escape.

Thanks

If you have never driven in heavy sand before I would say be very careful. The section of Tuckerton when it meets Carranza near the boot camp is bad. I speed up and drive between the ruts to keep my car high.

I would recomend to not drive it if you are remotely concerned about getting stuck.

While I have a 4x4 Escape I have been with folks that have FWD Escapes and they've done pretty well in the sand. Like Guy said, keep your speed up.

Just out of curiosity do any of you guys carry a small compressor so you can air down a bit? I've always found that it helped immensely with a 4wd vehicle, I'm sure it would make a difference with 2wd as well. Just don't get too greedy and lose the bead...ask me how I know...lol

No, I've never let air out in the Pines (well not out of my tires anyway :D). While there is a potential of getting stuck, it's not like being on the beach which is all sand. There is solid ground somewhere below the sand roads. Of course, if you do get stuck, you can let the air out (down to about 20lb) then hightail it (actually, go slow) to a service station to re-fill. It is a good idea to have a piece of plywood or something to put under your jack so it doesn't sink and some tow straps if you're lucky enough to have someone come by that can pull you out.

Whether with a kaiser jeep I had in high school, a number of trucks, cars, and a dunebuggy, I always bring a come-a-long, hunk o' chain for around a tree and a bit of good rope. Tipped my jeep on it's side once and got it up, out and running on my way with one. I've used the same old come-a-long for years. You gotta put muscle into it but they are a must I have to say.
