thanks to the feds, specifically the USGS. Its main purpose was to show coal reserves, but if you click on the globe in the upper left, then select either TOPO or SATELLITE, you'll get some really nice maps of the entire USA. The satellite is the best I've seen; very sharp compared to GE, Bing, etc.

I'd be curious to know if there's a way to view multiple layers at once? The satellite images are great, but if you could overlay the road map that would be helpful.

Here is an odd thing. They must have gotten them from Bing Birdseye imagery. I downloaded those from Garmin into my basecamp, but the ones in your link have a slightly better resolution. The government must have given them a better specification in their order. Garmin is on the right: Eureka gun club.

Bing gets their birdseye images from Earthstar; the source is displayed on most maps. Not sure where Garmin gets it, Boyd would probably know. Most map sites buy their stuff from companies that specialize in that sort of thing, except the gubmint, they get the ability to do it from us, the taxpayers.

Maybe this, you have to select what you want to build it. It has a neat option to overlay topo over imagery, roads show up as well.

Not sure where Garmin gets it, Boyd would probably know.

Unless there's been a change I don't know about, Garmin gets their imagery from Digital Globe, which is arguably the top provider of satellite imagery (they have been in the news recently WRT the search for the Malaysian airliner).

Some caution regarding these maps. It appears a portion, if not all, are pre-Sandy images. There are things shown on these maps that no longer exist up in my area. Cannot find anything that gives the date.
