SOUTH JERSEY WATER SUPPLY HEARING - MAY 6

Date: 30 Apr 2004
From: "rich" {rich@pinelandsalliance.org}

Are we using groundwater in a sustainable way? In general, the answer
is NO, according to a recently released report by the New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). The draft report
titled Status of the Water Supply of Southeastern New Jersey, makes
clear the serious water supply challenges facing the area,
particularly in Atlantic and Cape May Counties and to a lesser extent
the five other Pinelands counties. NJDEP has concluded that the region
will experience both "immediate and long-term problems associated with
its water supply." Housing development is the main reason for the
increase in water demand and loss of stream flows in the area. Both
the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and NJDEP will discuss
their findings along with the status of the shallow and deep aquifers
of the area. NJDEP will also explain their proposed strategy to fix
and/or minimize current and future problems.

The Hearing will be held on Thursday, May 6th at the Atlantic County
Library, 40 Farragut Ave., Mays Landing, starting at 7:30 pm. Since
the recommendations in the report will have far reaching positive
consequences for both the environment and water supply planning, the
Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA) supports the proposed
recommendations. We hope that you will attend this hearing and support
NJDEP's proactive approach. The complete report and/or Executive
Summary are available on NJDEP's web site at
http://www.nj.gov/dep/watershedmgt/hottopics.htm.
