This entry from Vivian Zinkin's "Place Names of Ocean County New Jersey (1609-1849)" really intrigues me:

Webbtown Pre-1845 (F. Reynolds)

Because several families of Webbs once lived here; loc. near Balcony Hill, in the SW part of Manchester Tp.

I'll have to study the Cooks Topo map Guy copied for me. I never heard of this............bob

I've found it. Pasadena Road cuts right through the center of it. I think I have been there, but did not know what it was. There is a type of gravel pit there. Still, it deserves a lookover. If I'm correct Guy, the Lawrence Line cuts about 50 yards to the West of Balcony Hill, and there is a marker on the Cooks Map.

Bob, Which Cook's map is it one? I can find Balcony Hill but not Webbstown.

The 1889 map only shows Balcony Hill, I only made the connection to Webbtown because of Vivian's book. I remember there being strange undulations in the ground at the back of the sand pit, kind of like channels dug in the ground. I'm betting it has something to do with it. But remember, it was probably not a real town, just named that by the locals in Whiting who knew a gaggle of Webbs lived there.

Something strange on the Cooks map; the direct road to Webbs Mill goes right behind Webbtown and not through it. I'm betting you would find an old path in the woods, like a shortcut, to that road..........bob

When it comes to markers, Guy is the man! 8)

When were you there Guy? Note one of the road directions descriptions says:

"CONTINUE FOR 0.1 MILE TO A DIM ROAD RIGHT"

I thought I would only be the person to call a long abandonded road "dim" looking. No better name for some of them though, eh?

Good going............bob

Most of the National Geodetic Survey Datasheets say Dim Road when they are in the woods. I had never heard that until I started looking for markers using the Datasheets. There are more markers there, but I did not think you would want them all posted. I noticed when I returned home that day that I missed one. It is an Azimuth mark and is quite a distance from the station. The next time I am in the area I have to look for it and then notify the NGS if it is viable.

I took the photo on 11/15/03 at 12:10:42 PM

Couldn't it just be another name for Webb's Mills?

Although it shows you are thinking Ben, no, I don't think so. Webb needed water for his Mill. This spot (Balcony Hill) is 204 feet above sea level, no water power.
