What gas weed whacker would you recommend? I looked at the 4 cycle Ryobi but the reviews are terrible. The only other 4 cycle I saw was Troy Built. Do you have a 2 cycle and do you like it?

I have a Troy-Bilt 2 cycle and it is the worst 2 cycle engine I have. I can never get the choke off and it is very hard starting. Every time I buy a product like that I look at all the boxes I have to choose from and wonder which one is the good one.

It seems they all have issues. Thanks Ed for your input.

I don't use a gas one, but check who the engine manufacturer is and their reputation; Ryobi, Troy-bilt and the others use generic engines such as Tecumseh, Briggs and Stratton. Honda makes good stuff, but you pay a big premium. FWIW, Troy-bilt contracted to have their powermore brand built in Asia, i.e. China.

I now have a Honda Lawn Mower and love it. I had Lawn Boy for 30 years before that and decide to switch. I will check into the Honda trimmers.

I have the Stihl FS 90 and I bought my son one for Christmas last year.
They kick ass with a lot of power and have a solid driveshaft so you can add blades for brush cutting too. It has the 4 Plus engine. It is a four stroke-ish motor that burns pre-mix. It does not have a separate crankcase for oil. Builds revs as quick as a two stroke.

I no longer buy gas powered items from big box stores. I buy from a local business, Robey's Lawnmower Repair in Medford. He services what he sells, on site, and he really knows what he is selling. I bought Echo blower and chain saw from him. He had them assembled and gassed up, and he started them for me to show me how to use them. He has helped me out for decades, fixing items I did not buy from him. Just saying that this type of service is worth it to me.

A trick to determine the quality of an engine is to check it's EPA rating. My Echo chain saw is rated to be compliant for 300 hours.

My son has a landscaping business and uses RedMax weed wackers exclusively. They are pricy but if you have enough acreage or fence line to justify the price, it will give you years of dependable service. Look on a local "items for sale" website for a used one as landscapers frequently sell their used but still fully functional equipment to upgrade to new equipment.
