It was too nice of a day to sit home and nurse a messed up back, so the dog and I made a short trip to Whitebog. On the way up 530 I could see smoke in the sky, looked to be out around Lakehurst. Along 70 the fire crews were burning the north side between 539 and 530, some very heavy smoke, and more further south.

Some views from Whitesbog looking toward Lakehurst with a Tundra Swan fly by;

Some Tundra Swans;

And the highlight of the trip, pretty poor quality, but he was way out there, handheld and heavily cropped. He struggled for quite a while till he got it swallowed. The pickerel had to be at least 2 foot long;

Nice photo's!

I don't see why they would want to eat a fish that big. It has to be uncomfortable for quite some time.

Great photos. Two feet might be a little long of a guess on that pickeral, but it does seem large relative to the bird. Those herons are really ambitious.

Yeah it would seem that way, but Great Blue Herons are one of the largest. The body length, head to tail approaches 5 feet. That 2 feet for the pickerel might be an understatement :D

here's a picture of my son Bub with his 25 " piceral he caught las t summer, It literally pulled him into the lake and I had to grab ahold of him but he still managed to land it.
