He's all kinked up like that because thats how they move to climb trees which is where they are at most of the time.You see the Garter snake is not nearly as kinked because they are more of a ground snake but Rat snakes spend a lot of time climbing trees and they have to kink up like that to grip the bark against gravity.I once saw a black rat a good eighty feet up in the second biggest yellow poplar tree in the country down in NC near the Smokies.

I've been with these Drexel students as we placed radio transmitters in the Pine Snakes in 2011. I hope to be out in the Pines with my son and some more herpetologists Friday in search of these snakes.
I will report back...if we end up going.
