Obscure settlement deep in Bass River S.F.

Indeed! I like the area between this ruin site and the dam on Beaver Branch. Also interesting is the deep ravine at the very head of the Ives Branch.

Obscure settlement deep in Bass River S.F.

Your in the correct spot Bobpbx. I was also assuming the structures circled in red were associated with the adjacent private property. There also appears to be three structures in the rough clearing between those circled in red and the ones featured in my photographs at the head of this post.

Obscure settlement deep in Bass River S.F.

Thanks Bobpbx, Sounds like a wonderful time! (as it tends to be). One thing I want to point out. You mention in the recount of the events of your Feb. of 2000 trip, "We over-shot a cabin site by a quarter mile..." The site in question appears to more than just a "cabin site" as is evidenced...

Obscure settlement deep in Bass River S.F.

A recent excursion, deep in the Bass River State Forest reveled more than I had expected... the ruins of some obscure settlement! Significant structures - one being over 48 paces long! I am interested in hearing from folks here who may be familiar with this site, and their thoughts as to what it...

    Atsion: Old and Renewed

Considering it basically went right around Atsion would cause one to think that was the case, but why would it have been acceptable for the town to be divided for the 135 years prior?

    Atsion: Old and Renewed

Wow, This goes to show that no matter how well you know a place, if you are not looking for it, you can miss it. I know what I'll be looking for next time out there.

    Atsion: Old and Renewed

I'm sure some of you have heard the dramatic story of a daring robbery that took place by Atsion. It was on October 5, 1916 that Andrew Jackson Rider, "The Cranberry King of New Jersey", also a founding member and first president of his namesake, Rider College, along with his daughter, brother...

    Atsion: Old and Renewed

I really appreciate the background on this monument - Thank you! The area around there is very special to me. Although I've explored throughout most of the Pines over the course of 20 years, the area around that monument is where my soul calls home. Thank you.

    Atsion: Old and Renewed

Thanks Teegate - very interesting. It's the monument by your jeep that I'm thinking of.

    Atsion: Old and Renewed

That would make more sense considering the Camden Co. is several miles to the NW. The monument by the Sleepy Cr./Atsion marks where the Atlantic/Burlington line diverges from the Atsion River.

    Atsion: Old and Renewed

Teegate, How about the monument by the confluence with the Sleepy Creek. I believe it also is a three-way.

    Atsion: Old and Renewed

I thought perhaps a directory of individuals who worked and resided at Atson would make a nice addition to this thread. The following folks lived and worked in Atsion during the early Wharton years. The population at Atsion during the year 1895 - 1896 was about 100.

    Atsion: Old and Renewed

Yes Teegate, That part (which at one time was entirely within the Atsion estate) was set off to Burlington County on April 3, 1902. The old boundary was the Atsion River. After 1902 the boundary became a straight line beginning at the confluence of the Sleepy Creek and the Atsion, to the...

A new historical novel set in the NJ Pine Barrens - The Truth and the Life

Hi Beth, I was wondering if you were aware of a novel written in 1949 by George Agnew Chamberlain entitled "Midnight Boy". It too took place in a fictional nineteenth century industrial town in the Pine-barrens. Also a paper-making settlement, this one however was modeled after Weymouth...
