I'll go with swamp chestnut oak.

    A big tree

Yeah, between forestry classes and a summer spent measuring every single tree, 6" diameter and larger, in Central Park, NYC (along with a crew of a few others) you tend to remember things like that. My grandkids' birthdates are another matter, to my wife's annoyance.

    A big tree

Actually, circumference should be measured at 4.5 feet from the ground (AKA breast height), and on the uphill side if on a slope. It may seem like a nit-picky difference but consistent height is nessesary for comparative measurements.

Willow Oak would be my next guess

    Stone Searching Fall/Winter 2023-2024

I stopped by this morning and it's in the same place it's always been. But either the vegetation has receded or someone has rolled it out a few feet. As far as Bob's comment about its size, it's certainly larger than anything the planes currently using the range would carry, but the range has...

Not to worry. A package is on its way to Bob! ;)

    Red Flag Warning

How exactly would this be a problem in a naturally fire dependent habitat? And since the prescribed burn season leads right into the highest risk part of the wildfire season, with associated hotter and faster moving fires, if fire was a problem at this time of the year for these species they...

    Zeb's Bridge

The document below has Germania Station (later Pineview) at 4.6 miles from Lakehurst, Appollonio 6.3 miles and the 1st Toms River station at 7.2 miles. I too am curious about what was there and the origin of the name. https://www.branchline.uk/jfpdf/newjerseyrrs.pdf

    More Exploring In Bass River

Bob, We appear to be essentially saying the same thing, that off-trail activity can be damaging in some cases, which was pretty much the only point I was trying to make. Once that point is established, the devil is in the details, trying to separate the random and fairly harmless use from the...

    More Exploring In Bass River

This isn't as cut and dry as some would like it to be. I also often leave trails in my explorations, and my hunting certainly isn't done on hiking trails. But this is usually in parks and forests that have less concentrated use. In others, off-trail traffic can indeed have an effect. I can show...

    Webbs Mill Bog

I don't think I'd say it's too late. I'm not all that concerned over the cedars. They aren't exactly in short supply, and dead trees have significant value in the environment too. It's the herbaceous species along the boardwalk that matter here. And the relatively small acreage of this specific...

NJ bag ban causing more plastic use

He was like so many of his generation, who experienced more adversity than any of us ever will, and threw little away, either repairing or repurposing them. But in the here and now, it is easier to get people to reuse a more durable bag that they shelled out money for, than a flimsy one...

NJ bag ban causing more plastic use

I'm curious how you arrived at that conclusion. One universal constant is that people dearly value their money, and the less they have, the more so. At supermarkets where you need to insert a quarter to release the shopping cart, you see very few loose carts in the lot. (I'll walk a hundred...

NJ bag ban causing more plastic use

I've also had zero failures with the reusable bags I've purchased since the law was enacted, and every one of them is still in my possession. I've found that the negative statements I've heard from people I know about the bags could have been predicted in advance, knowing their politics. To...

The Armchair Explorers of Google Maps

This one is my personal favorite: After I finished 10 minutes of laughing I posted a reply, explaining what mosquito ditches and impoundments were, and that these features were not present on aerials from the 30s, which anyone could look up. The reply was naturally deleted. Even more amazing...
