    Announcing the new NJPB Maps

This really makes this site so much more valuable. I wrote a little program to take my coordinates amd turn them into proper links for Boyd's and historic aerials so this is fantastic-

A Pines settlement called "Chicken Bone"?

I'd be more than happy to join you guys if you head out in the fall. I live a few minutes from the area

New Found(?) Gun Clubs/Cabins in the Pines

Here are the same coordinates on two maps just a few years apart. Note that the only major difference between these two is the naming of the area changes from "Goodwill Camp" in 1968 to "Gun Club" in 1973. Maybe I'm reading this all wrong but it just seems odd. Maybe a transcription error...

New Found(?) Gun Clubs/Cabins in the Pines

I took a few pics with The GPS app which should geo-tag them. Let me find how to export. I compared both the coordinates of the larger gun club we visited with this Goodwill camp and they are pretty much one and the same but I will check again.

New Found(?) Gun Clubs/Cabins in the Pines

Found something interesting about this particular location on a Historic Aerial map from 1968. Check this out: Was this a mistake or was there a Goodwill Camp in the same location as the Gun Club?

New Found(?) Gun Clubs/Cabins in the Pines

Well it's guys like you that help to keep many of these places around. Growing up in the area I never realized what was all around me. It's neat to come rediscover it now.

A Pines settlement called "Chicken Bone"?

Ben- your last mention is one of the four locations on my list. A 155 ft. Ridge, a Chicken-drumstick shaped ridge, a small sandy lake area, and a larger area based on an old Beers map. If that fails, perhaps everything north of the road connecting Jones and Long Ridge/Ridge.... Not sure when...

New Found(?) Gun Clubs/Cabins in the Pines

Ben- glad you took the links down. I'd like to visit this place again one day and it would be great to see it like this again. Plus, part of the thrill is the hunt!

A Pines settlement called "Chicken Bone"?

Hi to everyone that's following this discussion- I just wanted to let you know that I'm going to begin a hunt for this "Chicken Bone" location to see if there is any evidence of any people that once may have occupied this area. I've read as much as I can find on this site about this location...

    Union Clay Works Cellar Digging

I didn't really get a chance to explore too much as the torrential downpour was in full force. There was also what appeared to be a horizontal tunnel being dug in one of them as well, or perhaps it was an animal...

    Union Clay Works Cellar Digging

Guy, I went running out there and recorded by full track and I will upload the entire thing once I figure out how to do it. At minimum I'll post a screen grab.

    Union Clay Works Cellar Digging

It is off the main road about 50 ft or so. http://maps.njpinebarrens.com/#lat=39.843604042846614&lng=-74.41597938537598&z=16&type=hist&gpx=

    Union Clay Works Cellar Digging

Was out there yesterday, nearly drowning in the monsoon that rolled in. Not sure how I managed to get my car out but I will say that I love my Quattro! Found two holes, possibly cellars, and there was evidence of recent digging in both of these holes since there were piles of fairly fresh dirt...

New Found(?) Gun Clubs/Cabins in the Pines

Found some interesting info that will help date it: 1940 cleared land/plot only : http://www.historicaerials.com/aerials.php?scale=2E-06&lat=39.8606763908678&lon=-74.3516457451621&year=1940 1956 it appeared, and dimensions were apprx 57x57 and a T shape...

New Found(?) Gun Clubs/Cabins in the Pines

Boyd this weather is sure draining after a 2 hour jaunt but water is a savior. I like to be hydrated enough prior to starting that I need to pee before we get running. I went through a liter of water in 2 hours. The camel backs a burden to run with but it's a worthy trade off

    Smart Phone App: MotionX GPS

I've ditched my Garmin for now but it does suck battery life like crazy. If I'm out for 3 hours my phone is near dead. Perhaps I'll play around with the power saving settings next outing... I really like how you can mark a spot and associate a pic with that spot and it inserts it in the map for...

New Found(?) Gun Clubs/Cabins in the Pines

You have probably seen Lloyd if a Saturday- but I guess you could say we both run "topless" yes It's rare that we see a single person out on the trails but I'm sure our paths will cross one day.

The train tracks are still there - even a small half crushed train. It must have been quite a feat to haul all of the bags of concrete to pour that foundation...
