    Tick warning

I just read an old fashioned tip for tick removal. Iodine used to be very common. When I was a kid my parents always had a bottle in the medicine cabinet. It was used as an antiseptic. It had a skull and crossbones on the bottle. Iodine seems to be kind of rare nowadays. It is purported to...

Yeah, that day was great. One single brilliant, sunny day back again in my beloved old Pine Barrens. Thanks again, Guy.

    Oregon 450 sale at REI

Argh! I'm not only confusing dates of sales, I'm confusing this thread with the other one too.

Get a new GPS for 20% off at EMS this weekend

"Seems like you are over-thinking all this." Yes, I overthink everything. Trouble is my 276c is still going good and I like it. If it broke it would be different. I'd just as soon not go through the learning process and buy the maps again and the holder and whatever other accessories if I...

Get a new GPS for 20% off at EMS this weekend

Oh, duh. I see now that you posted that a month ago. So how come it only appeared in my email yesterday? I was thinking it was a thanksgiving sale. Say, Boyd, do you know about using tablets as GPS instead of a dedicated Garmin? I was ogling the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that Costco will be...

Get a new GPS for 20% off at EMS this weekend

Thanks, Boyd. Surprisingly in all the Not Valid fine print on the bottom, Garmin GPS - with the exception of "Garmin fitness instruments" - aren't excluded. But even so I don't know if I'm ready to switch to the Montana from my still working Garmin 276C.

    Could Use Some Help

Bergen - You can google up explanations for "orbs". They are not supernatural. They are photographic artifacts. That's not to say that there isn't anything spooky out there, tho in the numerous nights I spent camping out deep in the PB woods back in the old days I've never picked up any bad...

Not to mention groin, armpits, legs, behind the ears, scalp, back, and almost everyplace else! I do not like ticks. I hate them.

I miss those enchanted woods. You could see Atlantic City from the fire tower too. Guy said it was the clearest day he ever saw down there. And yes, it was some view - forest as far as the eye could see - and there we were, in the heart of New Jersey, the most densely populated state in the union!

    Visiting old haunts with Pan

I tuck my trousers into white socks and spray the socks with DEET for ticks. I've never been troubled with chiggers, not that I know of. Maybe they are some nice new thing down there since I stopped haunting those woods years ago. As for the shirt - duh, I never thought of that - and yes indeed...

    Thank you, Teegate!

I'm here from the southwest conducting an inspection tour of the northeast, and today Guy aka Teagate and Jessica gave me a great tour of my wonderful old Pine Barren haunts. PS Guy is one awesome sand driver!

Symposium on John McPhee's 'Pine Barrens'

I would have liked to gone to that. That great book was a big influence on me. I first started going down to the Barrens after reading a terrific article in the NY Times travel section about "those windswept pines" - an article that I posted on here a while back - and then I read McPhee's book...

    Camp Columbus near Bamber Lake

"The box turtles, lizards, snapping turtles, frogs, whippoorwills, bob whites are all quiet now." Where have all the Pine Barrens night sounds gone? Are the whippoorwills still singing? Have coyotes extended their range down there yet? Out here in the west you hear the coyotes singing at...

1859 Parry Sikes and Earl map of Burlington County

Wow, that's a beautiful map! I need to study it to see what I can relate to and try to find some familiar landmarks. I opened it OK with Firefox. I generally use FF or Opera.
