    Raised trail?

I didn't look before, but in 1930, you can see where they had it cleared, and they still had a small hut or something out in the swamp.

    Raised trail?

Maybe 10" or a bit less. I did not even go up to my elbow. We'd have to somehow dam a portion of the canal to route the water around it, a cofferdam deal. But we could also try to dig it out while in the water....or see if it goes all the way across

    Raised trail?

As I said, it was on both sides of the log and it started at the bank. It seems immovable, so maybe it's now wedged in tight. When I felt underwater, this is what it felt like (a cross section of a log with a very flat top). Perhaps they cut it at the old saw mill just a few hundred yards away.

    Raised trail?

But, I did find something very interesting at the Dash spot. He may have stumbled upon a spot that was used to cross by someone in the distant past. I was probing the canal bed on either side of the log, and I was surprised to have the stick tap on something 12" wide and very flat. At first I...

    Raised trail?

This is the Dash spot. Note the abscence of the shadow. Here, I stab the shadow to death. But not to worry. The sun is in the south this time of year, and there just happens to be a tree on the other side of the canal, but I was maybe an hour too late to see it cast its Pan-driven spell.

    Raised trail?

When I returned, I went through these two depressions. They are dry and not at all spungs. I think this was where they got the dirt to make the berm. It makes sense.

    Raised trail?

The wall of briar 15 feet in front of the canal following the line that should have been. Me wondering if Dash went through here. Me thinks no. But I did, and reaching the canal, I was sure it was not the spot he photographed. But Dash found a good spot to go in. No struggle at all.

This is the berm about 130 feet prior to the drop.

    Raised trail?

I found the exact place, yes. This is my track. Dash, you did not have a GPS, did you? It appears that as you saw the wall of shrubs and briar, you kept moving (subconciously maybe--we do it all the time) until you saw an opening, and you assumed you had the right place. More after dinner.

    Raised trail?

The shadow is making it look darker. After all, it's nothing but a shadow, which means something is blocking the sunlight. The most likely cause of the shadow is that log. This time of year the sun is low, you know.

    Raised trail?

What I meant by "you can still see the water behind the shadow" is simply my way of proving that it's not a solid object, otherwise it should not show the water.

    Raised trail?

Did you click on the photo to take a close look? You can still see the water behind the shadow.

    That is a shadow, Pan.

    Raised trail?

I still don't see in that photo (of the spot where the raised berm meets the marsh) an "almost vertical dark thing". Maybe it's me.

    Raised trail?

You are pretty good if you can see something vertical on an aerial map with certainty. Did you mean horizontal?

    Raised trail?

Boyds Map set up measures height. I see the raised area about 5 or 6 feet higher depending upon location.
