    Lock Your Vehicles

I would like to meet the woman who had enough balls to recover her own car in Camden. I'll bet when she jumped out of her ride to get the car she said.. "Here, hold my beer.":)

    Cape May County Explorations

A good friend of mine from my gun club just spent 12 days in the hospital from a Brown Recluse bite. He was camping in PA and it bit him while he was asleep. He now has a 15" long incision in his arm from where they had to remove necrotic tissue. I have a photo of his arm but it's too...

    Origins of Pestletown

I have lived in Pestletown for 40 years now and the street signs at the Chew Road intersection have read both Pestletown and Pestleton Road back and forth over the years. Not surprising since ton replaces town in a lot of place names. Chuton appears on the 1885 map I posted down near the...

    Origins of Pestletown

Found It !! This article was written in 1888. To me it seemed clear that Shane's Castle would have been on the north side of Clark's Branch because it references the cemetery that was to later become St. Anthony's, now Waterford Memorial Park. I don't if you know this, but the St. Anthony's...

    Origins of Pestletown

Piney Roots check out this post from 2014 and my responses. I actually attached a mark-up of the 1885 map that I posted this morning. https://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/shanes-castle-waterford.9921/#post-119722 I will still look for the article that hinted at the location being on...

    Origins of Pestletown

I have another theory on the location of Shane's Castle taken from articles I have found or that were forwarded to me by Jerseyman. In the meantime, here is a very cool 1885 map that I wish was reproduced more clearly. It should still be on file in Camden County Register of Deeds where I...

    Origins of Pestletown

Here is the 1942 Waterford tax map showing a separate Lot 12 for the cemetery. It was annotated "Cemetery Exempted". I will let Largo fill in the details about how he came to own it in 1999.

    Origins of Pestletown

The owner of the land is a friend of mine and he is a member of this site. He uses Largo as a screen name. I will call him this morning and ask him to check out this thread. The cemetery is definitely there and he will be able to fill in all of the details. If I recall correctly, the cemetery...

    Origins of Pestletown

Thank you for the marvelous post, a full twenty years after my original. The information you have researched and shared here is fascinating and detailed. The only hearsay fragment of information I ever gathered was from from Nelson Phero, born in Dutchtown on 206 in 1926 and a descendant of...

    The Turpentine Industry

Stumbled over this interesting documentary on YouTube this morning. It is interesting that I have never heard much at all about this industry in our Pine Barrens. It brings back memories of my grandmother's house where she always kept a gallon of turpentine on hand for thinning paint and other...

Google maps getting dumbed down even more?

Sorry about the hijack Boyd. As you can see, USGS 7.5 minute maps and driving my old trucks are two of my biggest passions. Odd, really.:)

Google maps getting dumbed down even more?

German, I had an '82 F-150 with the 300-inline with a Ford 4-speed manual with overdrive. I sold it to my father-in-law in 1987 and he ran it until he died. We sold it to a local landscaper who ran it for years. My first heavy duty truck was an '87 F-250, also with 300-inline. That truck had...

Man drowns after illegal dip in South Jersey mining lake

My guess is that he broke the legendary rule of no swimming within 15 minutes of eating.

Google maps getting dumbed down even more?

Oh, as for my 27 year-old 1997 F-350, I put her (the truck) to work yesterday along with my wife. This is my wife tooling up 73 yesterday with my baby, a 1997 F-350 to help me do a final cleanout of my sister's house with me. Photo taken from my 22 year-old 2002 F-350 diesel. Hard to find a...

Google maps getting dumbed down even more?

You’re missing my point somewhat, Boyd. Placing a simple key map on a site plan in the old USGS map format was perfect and showed just enough information for the purpose at hand. It didn’t have to be screaming with detail, it just needed to have an informative image and be just a little bit...

Google maps getting dumbed down even more?

I purposely zoomed way out on the newer map to show the dearth of contour labeling. The old maps always gave you road intersection spot elevations too. I’m a dinosaur and I like it !!

Google maps getting dumbed down even more?

27 year old truck. Get it right! :) My issue with the maps is not only the lack of physical detail, but they also thinned out the contour labeling so much that you get lost trying to follow a contour to see what it is. We used to use snippets of USGS maps for our key maps in various land use...

Google maps getting dumbed down even more?

That doesn't bother me nearly as much as what the USGS did to the 7.5 minute quarter-quads several years ago. It's almost criminal. The maps are essentially worthless now.
