    Why am I not surprised.

    Parkway tree cutting

As Chrisr said (which I read after I posted this :)), not only can fire “jump” across large openings under the right conditions, but a single burning leaf or ember can be blown hundreds of yards and can extend the fire well downwind. Few openings can be guaranteed to stop a fire but at those...

    restricted areas ?

I’m glad you could figure that out! Those types of word problems always gave me a headache in school.

    restricted areas ?

Very cool photo Pancoast. I always find it interesting to note the difference between the speeds of light and sound when watching the A-10s fire. You see that puff of smoke and then hear the guns up to five or more seconds later.

    Parkway tree cutting

If the past is any guide, they will probably end up planting several million dollars on landscaping to “beautify” the scar they created, then try to justify another toll increase to help pay for it. :argh:

    Attention NJ Forest Fire Service

I did not see any of the posts criticizing prescribed burning, but since it has been brought up, it should be pointed out that prescribed burns DO NOT mimic wildfires, as far has having the effect of opening the serotinous cones of Pitch Pines. This may occur in the plains, where such burns...

Broken China, Clam Shells and Brick Foundation

I was looking for the old thread about it too. I seem to remember it being described as a pig farm that accepted refuse from a fancy hotel somewhere, perhaps LBI, and fed it to their pigs, broken plates and all.

    Walking water balls are dangerous

It does seem a little nutty for a kids ride. I hope it isn't between the bb gun and the darts-at-balloons boothes.

    Has any body this?

I've never seen that edition but the drama club at Pinelands Regional High School recently staged the Wizard of Oz and their version included the jitterbug scene. I sat there confused, wondering how I missed that part in the movie the fifty or so times I’ve seen it.

    Has any body this?

I think I saw it throwing apples at Dorothy and Toto a long time ago.

    Odd

I checked with my source and he was not sure about the small raised landforms, but stated that the dikes and impoundments were built by CCC workers in the 1930s shortly after the game farm property was acquired by the state. They were put at about the same time as the impoundments south of...

    Odd

I have never seen anything like the raised features on the marsh, but my first guess regarding the ponds would be related to mosquito control, as already mentioned. Salt hay harvesting often involved diking the meadows, but I’m not sure they would have created deeper impoundments like those seem...

    Brookville's Oyster--A PBX Trip

There are the test wells on Rt 532 and another group on Brookville Rd. The water from the park's well gets tested regularly also. I only get the results from the park's well, which has never had any problems. I've seen what you observed and never given it much thought, assuming it was the type...

    Brookville's Oyster--A PBX Trip

It looks like you guys passed very close to the ancient abandoned pickup with wooden spoked wheels. It’s nestled within a patch of laurel and only easily spotted after a prescribed burn (which was when I first saw it).

    Facebook Too Big?

I started a Facebook account a few months ago for the same benefits Greg described, getting in touch with old friends. I was immediately besieged with e-mails notifying me of messages and friends requests from coworkers, family members in my own household, and other people I see or talk too on a...

    Recommend a Shotgun

It may be regarding an Ocean County College sailing facility that has been in the works for a number of years now. Not much was happening on the project, and I seemed to have forgotten the few details I was aware of. My brain isn’t holding onto things as it once did.

    Recommend a Shotgun

I stopped by Rays once when I was in the area to replenish some of my fly tying supplies. I walked out with a 20 gauge Ruger Red Label over/under from their used gun rack. Moral….never keep your firearm ID card in the glove box!
