    Fire in Bass River

I smell smoke in Waretown this morning too and it doesn't seem windy enough to be coming from Bass River.

    Fire in Bass River

I’m also never thrilled to see animals die, but I just consider it all part of nature. Nature often seems cruel, but cruelty and kindness are human terms, not natural ones, based on our own perspective. Of course, in the case of fire, one can complicate the discussion with the instances of...

    Silver Fox "Lounge"

I'd like to go there too now. It kinda makes you wonder how many other "dives" you pass may actually be great places to patronize.

    What is this

It took me a while to find it, but it doesn’t look like a plane to me. I’d say it is definitely a bird, but I can’t zoom in close enough to tell what kind. It looks white, unless the color is distorted by the sun’s reflection. If I had to guess, I’d say a gull, or less likely, a snowy owl.

    A photo to ponder

At least they found a remote spot. If I had long-ago started taking blackmail photos in the Wells Mills lot I could have retired by now.

    Forest fire in Barnegat

In regards to landscaping, I guess it goes back to the old saying “there’s no accounting for taste”. It is not limited to the Pine Barrens. No matter where you are in the state or country, most people landscape their yards in a manner disharmonious with the original native environment. I’m half...

    A photo to ponder

If it was in another part of the country I would have suggested a cache to protect food and supplies from bears. If not a hunting blind, surrounded by a planted feed plot, perhaps a photographer's blind?

    snapping turtle

Regarding the first photo in the thread, it’s not a good idea to pick up a snapper by its tail. It is no doubt the safest way for the person holding it (providing it is held far enough from your body for that long neck to not reach you) but it can cause injury to the vertebrae of the turtle. I...

    Fishing, again

I seem to recall a method of cooking them in a way that caused the smaller bones in the fillets to soften and virtually disintegrate. It might have involved boiling them first. I don’t exactly remember. I put more than enough saltwater fish in the freezer, so my freshwater catch goes back into...

    Fishing, again

I know there are lots of effective pickerel lures but I just can’t seem to bring myself to use anything but a red and white Daredevil spoon for them. It is the classic pickerel lure and I’m just too much of a damned traditionalist

    Big brother in warren grove

I love the quote regarding crewless passenger planes in the future, claiming that we have the technology now, and “the computer hardly ever messes up”. I somehow find little comfort in that boast.

    Frog ID

It looks like a Wood Frog, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm much better with plants than I am animals. I like how plants stay in one place while you try to ID them.

    Cedar Water Potability

I debated this topic with a friend recently who claimed that he drank from local rivers many times without incident or illness. But I imagine you could blindfold yourself and safely walk across the Garden State Parkway nine times out of ten. But that tenth time would be a bitch, as would be the...

    Sweetwater Church

Interesting pics! I've been getting into collecting postcards myself lately. It sure beats the expense and space my waterfowl decoy collection has cost me. I started with cards featuring local railroads and lifesaving stations, spurred by a couple of PowerPoint presentations I was putting...

    The ATV war continues

A point I mentioned in an unrelated thread bears considering. They stopped making new woods long ago but they haven’t stopped developing what we have. The amount of open space available for recreation in this state is shrinking. The problem with finding legal places to ride ATVs is going to get...

    Shooting

You can shoot .22 rifles at the state ranges, which are fun to shoot, as well as cheap (no resulting bruises either!)

    Bending or Breaking the rules

A growing problem in New Jersey that didn’t exist in the good ole days, when you could do anything you wanted in the woods without being bothered, is that thanks to development there are less woods in the state and more people trying to enjoy them than ever before. Leaving everyone to their own...

NJ Northern Bobwhite Action Plan published

I never hunted grouse down here but chased them all the time before I left Passaic County in the early 80s. When I go back and hunt my favorite spots from back then I walk all day and not get a single flush, where I flushed a dozen a day back in the late 70s. I haven’t heard what I consider...

NJ Northern Bobwhite Action Plan published

I’m all for restoring populations by releasing birds from wild stock, in addition to habitat management. But that is usually referred to as reintroduction as opposed to stocking, which normally consists of releasing birds with little expectation of long term survival or reproduction. A minor...
