NJ Northern Bobwhite Action Plan published

The action plan in that link details exactly why it is not a good idea to stock quail. Besides the sound biological reasons given, put-and-take hunting has conditioned several generations of hunters to come to believe that shooting birds that were living in cage until a day or two before is real...

    jim ungehajer's illness

I am so saddened to hear of Jim’s illness and condition. I never did get a chance to share time with him in the field but did meet with him at a few special events as well as at Wells Mills Park to help him with some maps he was interested in. We also corresponded many times by e-mail and...

Batsto Decoy and outdoors show May 16th

This is the second year in a row I will miss this show due to having to work. Oh well, I'll get my fill of decoys soon enough.

    Lady Slippers And Other Things

This must be a good year for Lady Slippers. They seem to me to be a bit more numerous in the usual places I find them. I was also trout fishing this past Mother’s Day in northwestern Passaic County and saw loads of them up there as well.

Help me ID this device from a barn in PA

Nice pics! I am always fascinated by old buildings and the materials and joinery used to make them. No idea on the hoist though. One guess would be for hoisting livestock for butchering, with the hooks uses to snag the gambrels spreading the critter’s legs. The hole in the middle may have once...

    Atlantic Brick Manufacturing Company

Bricks from that works were also used at the Bethlehem Loading Company. Bricks at the ruins of the powerplant are labeled as such and I imagine other structures there were built from them as well. I actually learned of the existence of the brickworks after researching the brands on the...

    Atlantic Brick Manufacturing Company

I had reason to drive by the site of the Atlantic Brick Manufacturing Co., in Mays Landing today and noticed the large stacks from the brickworks were gone. I pulled into the adjacent commercial lot and explored the site and found fresh equipment tracks on the newly graded site and nothing but...

    King Eiders at Weymouth Furnace

Since Mallards adapt to captivity readily, most of the world’s domestic ducks are descended from them. When left to their own breeding choices, offspring of these ducks eventually start showing their mallard heritage. The fact that the smaller duck in your photo is slumming with a Muscovy leads...

    New law in effect today

Yep, common sense seems to be irrelevant these days. What about the driver who comes to a full stop, then cuts off oncoming traffic by pulling out anyway? Apparently that is perfectly fine but the driver who rolls through a stop sign after being sure it is safe to proceed is not.

    King Eiders at Weymouth Furnace

Looks more like the mighty muscovy duck to me. Eiders would be a rare sight that far inland. You don't even see them in most parts of the bay. They prefer the ocean. Can't say what the smaller one is. A hen something-or-other.

    what's burning?

The plains always burn nasty, whether it’s a prescribed burn or a wildfire. As long as the prescribed burn stays within its boundaries, it’s all good. The low, slow burns you see done elsewhere reduce fuel and help with wildfire prevention but do little to mimic the wildfires that most...

    Signs along Highways

Yep. I read your post too quickly, and thought the pic was taken at Bullock. Now I can stop scratching my head, wondering how I missed it at Bullock! :)

    Signs along Highways

That looks just like the sign at the Parker Preserve. It's even broken in half in about the same place.

Clovedale Farm County Park building burns

Bob, Thank you for the kind words. Gipsie, We were keeping a list of willing volunteers but were waiting on the opening of the visitor center to organize them. Many of the volunteer tasks we had in mind went up in flames with the building. For able-bodied volunteers, we will be doing work on...

Clovedale Farm County Park building burns

The packing house (We have been referring to it as the sorting house) has been part of the tours we’ve conducted, but the room where the sorting takes place is not really safe for groups of public nor spacious enough for interpretive displays. The old farmhouse had much more room and was better...

Clovedale Farm County Park building burns

Wells Mills has been open for several months now. We pray and lay offerings before our dehumidifiers on a daily basis ( I got voted down on the sacrificing of a virgin). The building at Cloverdale was the old farmhouse located on the left side of the entrance road, closest to the bogs.

Clovedale Farm County Park building burns

The building is a total loss. Cause is currently under investigation. Not much more to say. It hasn't been determined whether it will be rebuilt or not. The visitor center was more to take advantage of an existing structure than to fill the need for a facility. For now, we will continue has we...
