    What do I have here?

What you have in that container is an Eastern milk snake, Lampropeltis t. triangulum. They can be very nasty and their coloration variable.

A nice rattle snake this morinig

The number of buttons is not a reliable determining factor, as a single button is added with each shed, and the snake may shed multiple times per year. A snake with a disease such as snake fungal disease will shed even more often than average. The buttons are also subject to be broken off or...

    Flowering Sundews

Beautiful shots Ed! It's funny, I often find the thread leaved sundews in more dry and sandy conditions than the spatulate or round-leaved. The round-leaved seem to be strongly associated with sphagnum, and the spatulate-leaved seem to love muck. How far from water were these?

    Another Tick Question

Thanks for the info 46er and Boyd. 46er, this was a new batch, purchased this year. Maybe the dog ticks are really that bad this year.

    Another Tick Question

Another thing-is anyone finding that permethrin doesn't seem to be working as well this year? Last year after the initial application of permethrin, and through at least 5 subsequent washings, I did not get a single tick on me. This year I have them crawling up my leg after one washing and not...

    Another Tick Question

Hi Folks, I came across this article today: http://www.nj.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2015/06/tick-borne_illness_first_diagnosed_in_hunterdon_wo.html#incart_2box_nj-homepage-featured In it, it describes the disease Borrelia miyamotoi, which I believe we discussed on here at least a year ago...

    Ticks explode

I thought that punks were dried cat tails? At least when I was a kid we used to burn dried cat tails and we called them punks. They really did keep the mosquitoes away.

    Ticks explode

Bobpbx, I agree about the vigilance. We are definitely vigilant, but my concern is that one deer tick that I don't see on my clothes that falls off into my car, and ultimately gets onto one of the kids. Al, the resistance was one of my concerns. Sue, great info. I've heard conflicting...

    Ticks explode

I've seen a staggering number of dog ticks up here, and lots of lone star ticks in the Pine Barrens, but very few deer ticks so far (knock on wood). Also, and this is rather bizarre, I must have gotten a bad batch of permethrin, because it's not working anywhere near as well as last year. I...

    Pine Barrens unusual names

Mount Misery used to be Mount Misericordia (translates to Mountain of Mercy), which was a tuberculosis sanatorium run by the Sisters of Mercy. Ong's Hat had something to do with a man named Jacob Ong who threw a fit and tossed his hat in to a tree, and inadvertently marked the location of...

    Raptor

I don't believe that it's an accipiter (sharp shinned or cooper's), as the tail is too short. They have shorter wings and longer tails to maneuver through forests in pursuit of birds (their primary prey). They also tend to have streaked breasts. Buteos (red-tailed, red-shouldered, etc) have...

    Raptor

Hi Bob, I think that it's a red-tailed hawk. I'm also pretty green as far as birders go, but I believe that I am seeing the belly band in the first picture that is diagnostic of red-tailed hawks. Mark

    Wonka Wonka

Thanks Bill. It's been very dry the past few weeks, and warm. I'd be willing to bet that the next time a good rain comes through, as long as the temps don't drop, that you'll be able to get a good idea if there really is less activity now than in years past. Best of luck! Mark
