I found the Pine plains!! thanks everyone here are the photos!

700-800 lb may not be the norm, but I don't think that it's outrageous. IIRC from what I've read, we've got some pretty healthy bears here in NJ (many of the probably dumpster bears). Anyone know stats on average weight for NJ bears vs. overall in N. America?

I found the Pine plains!! thanks everyone here are the photos!

Agreed about the bears here vs. other parts of the country. I understand that black bears in British Columbia are typically more aggressive and 'wilder' if you will, and you are more likely to experience a predatory attack from a black bear there than here. I wonder if it has anything to do with...

I found the Pine plains!! thanks everyone here are the photos!

Funny that you go for Halloween hikes on Jenny Jump. We do that too. We didn't feel threatened, but it was definitely eerie because we were the only ones there in the forest with the bear. The bear ran about 50 feet and hid behind a tree and kept playing peek-a-boo around the tree. I am...

I found the Pine plains!! thanks everyone here are the photos!

My wife and I came within 10 feet of a black bear on Jenny Jump Mountain. I didn't think that I would be able to get my wife back into the woods after that. She didn't seem to blink for several hours afterward.

    Young's Mine and Port Murray

Hey Mark! It's great that you made it to Cataract Park. I thought that it was really nice, and it was quite a climb, especially for such a small place. Did you see the waterfall and ravine? Mark

PBTF and Green Tree Frog Range Overlap?

Hey Folks, Thank you for the info and insight! You guys really know your stuff and I am learning a lot from these discussions!! Al, regarding the calls, I read in an abstract that either H. cinerea or H. andersonii will respond more favorably to the call of a hybrid than its own species...

PBTF and Green Tree Frog Range Overlap?

Hi Folks, I've been doing some reading about the breeding population of green tree frogs in Salem County. I can't help but to wonder if there would be any consequence for pine barrens tree frogs if the range of green tree frogs expanded into the PBTF habitats? I think that, genetically, they are...

    Bevan WMA Forest Fire

Yep, definitely like a snore. Never had the pleasure of seeing or hearing a spadefoot in the wild. Coincidentally I was thinking that last night's weather might have been a good time for them.

    Bevan WMA Forest Fire

Hi Al, I made a mistake, I apologize. The bullfrog photo was taken at Manasquan Reservoir, not Turkey Swamp. I've only been on the inner loop at Turkey Swamp and near the lake, but I understand that it's nice when you get out toward the river. They had a few cases of mosquitos found with EEE...

Hey Al, Turkey Swamp is in Monmouth County, not too far from Allaire State Park. Which three frog species? Mark

    Bevan WMA Forest Fire

Al, if you consider Turkey Swamp the Pine Barrens, I've got photos of a bullfrog from there. It was taken last year. Bill, Anytime you are ready, the offer is always good. The wood frog action was pretty intense this year. I swear that the male to female ratio was much higher this year too...

Bill that's a great recording. Beautiful! I hear peepers, leopards, PBTF's, whippoorwills, green frogs, carpenter frogs. Was that recording made relatively early in the year (late april / early may)?

    Bevan WMA Forest Fire

Glad the pbtf's are okay. Wouldn't the fire would have to go into the cedars to get them, meaning an unusually catastrophic fire? I understand that snakes duck into burrows during forest fires and the fires pass safely overhead. Sad about the turtles. Al, I have a problem with the achilles...

    Ticks

Not sure if this is the case for the folks down in the Pines, but I've hiked several times in the mountains in N. Jersey and in Mercer County and I've only seen a single dog tick, the rest are deer ticks. It's like the cold winter affected the number of dog ticks but not the deer ticks at all...

    Natural Navigation

I wanted to get in here because I know that it's going to be a great thread, especially with Al sharing this much info. Al, when you and I went out this summer and you showed me some techniques, I practiced them afterward. One thing that you showed me that was really cool was how to use a...

    Snake!!!!

Spring peepers and gray treefrogs can withstand freezing as well. I am not sure about this but it's possible that one or both of the chorus frog species do as well. IIRC, the mechanism begins with a response similar to an adrenaline rush, the liver converting glucose and firing it into the cell...
