Awesome post! Great photographs, and a little intimidating!

    Snake!!!!

Al, I think the hognose venom is specific to their prey (toads), with little effect on humans. I've heard that their favorite prey (spadefoots) sometimes cause some nasty allergic reactions in people though.

    Snake!!!!

For some reason I am having trouble quoting posts, but this is for Joc. What you had written about the ringnecks is the reason why I asked Al the question. I found ringnecks in Monmouth County that had the complete neck band and belly markings, but I also found them up in Somerset county, which...

    Snake!!!!

Hi Al, The ringnecks that you found, do they have a belly without markings? Or do their bellies look like this guy below?

    Snake!!!!

I love them too. Ringnecks and the Storeria (browns and redbellied) are a great 'gateway' snake for people who are terrified of them and they are beautiful. Ringneck musk is surprisingly potent though. I've never even seen evidence of any cloacal discharge but boy I sure did smell it (for a long...

    Snake!!!!

I agree too, especially about the water snakes. They'll roll, projectile poop and bite at the same time. Nothing civil about them. Rats can actually be unpredictable.

    Music for the day

Well folks, since winter has a solid grip and these are some gloomy times of the year, here's a little something to bring some sunshine:

    Music for the day

Always gave me chills. The meaning of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme is something like peaceful, strong, faithful love (or something like that).

    Just a Picture

My son loves the woods, but most of the time we go to the mountains or to local spots in Mercer County. He fell in love with the Pine Barrens on our first visit, just like his dad did many years ago. I thought that his sense of wonder was captured just a bit with this picture:

Litter and Trash at East Creek Lake. Grrrrr....

Ridiculous and awful. I saw a lot of the same stuff last year at Bass River SF. I understand the precaution of not wanting to leave trash cans around for the wildlife to get into, because that situation would be worse (even more trash strewn about and human-food habitated animals to boot). That...

    Snowy Owl

Great shots folks! I saw a bald eagle on Christmas morning in Allentown, NJ, and a pair a few weeks back in Hamilton. Nice to see them making a comeback. How many snowy owls are now present at Forsythe?
