A Fine Time For Fine Wine

Ben, That was a rough day for many of the crew. If I stayed any longer I would have needed an intervention of some sort.

A Fine Time For Fine Wine

Seven years to the day since I started the thread. Put up 36 gallons today and I have 12 more gallons coming on Tuesday. Prices are holding about the same as last year. http://ginopinto.com/pdfs/GPI%202016%20FALL%20RETAIL%20GRAPE%20&%20JUICE%20PRICES.pdf Go get it ! One change was a new juice...

    Miller's Bog Road Crossing

Wow ! I am pleasantly surprised. The Parks and Forestry people have jumped on this problem with much appreciated fervor. I just got back from taking my gun for a walk (September Goose) with the dogs and when I rounded the bend I saw that the new pipe has already been delivered ! This is...

    Chigged!

I worked two days this week around Braddock's Mill Pond in shorts. I sprayed Deep Woods Off on my legs and ankles until I was shiny twice each day and came out unscathed. I think if I drank a shot of that stuff every day I'd be bulletproof !

    Miller's Bog Road Crossing

Guy, Fish and Wildlife is very well aware of the beaver problems and they issue nuisance permits rather easily during the trapping seasons. Hewey's buddy piled them up like cord wood this year with a nuisance permit up north. One problem is that there aren't that many trappers in the State...

    Miller's Bog Road Crossing

This will likely be a very expensive repair. The substantial flow of the Punp Branch a.k.a. Albertson Branch will have to be managed by construction of a coffer dam and bypass pumping or constructing a temporary relief channel. The vertical difference between the bog and the lower stream make it...

    Miller's Bog Road Crossing

Our friend Turtle here on this website was able to get to the right people quickly. The road has been temporarily closed and there is a formal announcement on the parks and forestry website under Wharton state forest . If someone was driving on this road and it collapsed, it could have been...

    Miller's Bog Road Crossing

Body Grippers have to be set below the water with your trap tag visible above the water Al. A lot of trappers find an active path where they are coming up and down the bank and set that just below the water surface. Scary but legal.

    Miller's Bog Road Crossing

There are three dams downstream, all within a half mile of the road crossing..

    Miller's Bog Road Crossing

Will do John. I haven't heard back from my other contact yet. I may have to take up beaver trapping. They have also destroyed a huge expanse of white cedar in the last two seasons just downstream of the road crossing. 330 body grippers scare the hell out of me though. Always thinking about dogs.

    Miller's Bog Road Crossing

The road across Miller's Bog (a.k.a. Ancora Bogs) is ready to blow. The beavers have been out of control for the last few years back here. They are now plugging the vertical outflow weir structures forcing water to find a path underground along the sides of the large diameter pipes that convey...

    Downeast Maine

I have been to Maine 4 times between 1972 and 1985. 3 of those trips were centered around Acadia. There are nice trails throughout the coastal mountains and the shoreline is ruggedly beautiful. You can't go wrong with Acadia. On the 1972 trip my parents and I went into St. Andrews Canada. It...

    Winslow WMA Crackdown !

From the Winslow Township Police Facebook page. It is very encouraging to read about all of the recent stepped up enforcement in other areas as well. Could we have been correct in our position that closing roads was not the answer ? Naah, that's crazy talk. Local Quarry Enforcment - Blue...

    Garden 2016 Underway

I am having the best year in recent memory for peppers. I think maybe the hotter weather helped. Yesterday afternoon I put up 7 quarts of cherry hots and long hots and I left a lot hanging. The cubanelles are really kicking too and we have had side dishes of sautéed long hots and friers three...

    Garden 2016 Underway

That's awesome Guy ! I can't believe that you can grow that many onions in such a small area. What is the variety ? Are they a sweet onion ? The only subsurface plant I ever messed with was radish.

    Chigged!

I start exercising caution right about this time of year. I thought I could sneak through this little patch without "them" noticing me. Apparently their less than the size of a grain of sand brain is very acute.

    Chigged!

Took a 3.5 mile walk on trails last night after work and passed through a 100 yard stretch of some ankle high weeds in one section. Right ankle looks like it took a load of 8's. Scratching like a dog right now. Be afraid, be very afraid. :(
