It may have been spontaneous ignition of dry pine needles under the sun, caused by a bottle on the ground or something. It's rare for fires to get seriously out of control with vegetation this far established.

Are you finding it near the dam at the Chatsworth lake outlet? Is most of the settlement just downstream on the west side of the river? This seems to be one of the forgotten forges.
