    My Uncle Jimmy (mom's brother-in-law) was a heavy truck mechanic for 40 years or so. He worked at a couple places up on route 1 near New Brunswick and Metuchen. I'm going to ask him next time he calls. He's 88 now and has a great memory.

    Why were they made? My first reaction is sand in the chain, and "a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link". Seems like an idea that was later found to be unworkable.

    Come to think of it, yes. This hill is less than 1/2 mile from that hill of huge sandstone rocks where the Batsto river crosses Carranza Road.

    Yes, some of the other topos show it at 204 feet with the road going over the 204 level. But, they dug out both sides quite a bit, especially the NW side.
