Some input on buying a winch

Here is my suggestion, and yes, it comes from experience: Get an AMERICAN MADE engine hoist!! I have gone through four or five of those come-a-longs with the wire cable. Most are made in china, I think even that one with the American pull name or whatever. Trust me. The spockets wear out...

Glad you guys had a good time out there. Nice catch on that snake Bob, they can be nasty when trying to catch them. Was he still a bit sluggish from the cold? Nice color phase. Looks like a lot of swamp maples from the photo. Jeff

What dangerous animals live in the pines?

Well, there's the Jersey Devil for starters...actually you have very little to worry about. There are black bears but they are very few and far between, you might want to tie up your food as a precaution, good idea anyway for the racoons. The only poisonous snake is the timber rattle snake but...

Your welcome. The spotting scope sounds like a great idea. Are you going canoe/kayak, waders, or fishing from the bank? Jeff

Yeah, the bait shops are few and far between. You can try the mullica marina on 542, or you can go to Lee's out on route 72. It is called Pine barren stoves, he has everything there. Lee is a good guy. Only problem is his hours are inconsistant. The shop is past the lake for you...

That sign is fairly recent. Guy, I mentioned that sign to you on one of our hikes, that is why it might be familar. I think it was when we hiked those bogs on the east side of Caranza. I had been down that road many times and then suddenly there was that sign one day, a memorial I guess...

    Are these snakes in pines?

Indoor plumbing is the devil!! :) I just mentioned that so that it was understood that indigenous flora and fauna of the pinebarrens are surrounding me.

    little swamp

That is pretty cool. I've been around that swamp but I don't think I 've been to that exact spot you photographed. Then again maybe I have I don't remember. That whole area around there is very nice with some beautiful cedar swamps. Looks like you found a little savanna in there!! Thanks for...

To Side, or not to Side

I don't believe they did, I did not know such a thing existed. Under the old steel siding was the original asbestos siding, so they left it and put the vinyl over that. It is my understanding that asbestos is fairly safe if left undisturbed. My house was built in the late '60's. Jeff

To Side, or not to Side

I had my house resided with vinyl siding this year. Previously it had steel siding (yes, steel) but it was a very unattractive color and too dark to paint over. The new vinyl siding looks great. However, it does flex (unlike the steel) and makes quite a bit of noise, it is not annoying but...

    Carolina Sandhills, pineland, wetland, etc.

thanks for the report Bill. I think i recall reading in "the pine barrens" by John McPhee that Bill Wasovich said he once relocated to the pine barrens of south Carolina, but only stayed for a short while. I recall hearing of this area also as being very similar to the NJ pine barrens, but it...
