I dont have any problem with many values Christianity espouses, its as you say, the strict interpretations that leave little room for creativity and free thinking that I have issues with.

Anyone up for a Batona Thru Hike the week of August 18th?

Well I was thinking starting around Bear Swamp Hill heading down around the Pine Plains and catching the Batona 3 or 4 miles south of there. Penn State is maybe my favorite Pines area with the Plains, nesting eagles, Lake Oswego, very cool swamps, and cranberry bogs. I'll see about sending you...

Thats to funny, Harpers and Antietam are both such great places. I always say that if I ever move south it'll be to WV. YIKES!!!! about the Glen, with elevation in the md 2000' ft range those drop offs are no joke. I'm a South Jersey boy too, but I love the variety PA offers me. Once you...

    Piney Boy takes a holiday

I know, I know its not the Pines, but it is what I have been up to so..... We are all creatures of habit and I am no exception. August comes and I fine myself yearning for a vacation of some kind, daydreaming away vacations from the past and plans of the future. By the time the car was packed...

Anyone up for a Batona Thru Hike the week of August 18th?

Fun pictoral, good time huh. Looks like you had great weather too. I'm planning on doing the Batona sometime in early October if your looking for a repeat. Probably gonna have 3 or 4 of my hiking posse as well. Was thinking of a non traditional start of Penn State Forest at the Plains down...

    Fort Mott

visited ol' Fort Mott and Finns Point over the weekend. Posted some pics already and I'll see about writing up a little trip report. It was a nice time, to bad the ferry is out of service for the season.

    Fort Mott

I was there in spring last year and the entry was wide open. Looks like they used cheap plywood to close the opening, and vandals ripped it down. Inside was littered with trash, liqour remnants, and grafitti. For whatever reason NJ refuses to invest money and resources into protecting natural...

Now that is a nice day out and about Mike. So much history around that area; Civil War, Spanish America, WW II. What else could one ask for! I think you've inspired me to make my way back down there, its been to long. Speaking of the Cape May Bunker, I wish they would seal it off. Kids have...

Any good hiking trails in the Pines aside from Batona?

Good stuff, but the trick is you can't use it on treated clothing. Wicking or other similar "sport" clothing lose their nature when sprayed with strong compounds. During tick season I use long pants with gaiters and short sleeves with deet on my arms. Big ol' hat is a must to, but I wear hats...

Any good hiking trails in the Pines aside from Batona?

I usually leave the purifier at home on Pines trips to, I dont mind packing in what I'm gonna use. Convertibles are a good idea, thats what I do most of the time, they come off at breaks, camp, and water plunges.

Anytime you want to overnight just let the ranger station know of your plans and they'll give you a pass to display in your car window. This is especially important because you need a permit to use Lower Forge or the Mullica River Wilderness Campsite.

Any good hiking trails in the Pines aside from Batona?

Lots of choices off of the Batona. Penn State Forest offers Lake Oswego, eagles, open trails free of undrergrowth, cranberry/blueberry bogs, dwarf pines, and bear swamp hill. Out of Batsto you can take the Mullica River Trail up to a campsite on the river a little over 6 miles up. Down in the...

    Interest Check - NJPB T-Shirts

I may be interested, any design ideas? And is it possible to have the shirts made of polypropalene instead of cotton. I say this because I'd probably use it outdoors, and I dont wear cotton outdoors.

    Summer Daze in the Pines

The only place I know of moose in the Dacks is way up in Adirondack Park, it almost borders Canada. A buddy was out there last spring and brought back some pics. Biggest animal I've seen half close to this region are elk in PA, still an impressive animal to see up close.

Anyone up for a Batona Thru Hike the week of August 18th?

If you are just looking for a nice long hike I would suggest the the West Rim Trail or Black Forest Trail's in PA. They both offer a real challenge, with awesome payoff views, and aren't near as buggy, but if you have your heart set on the Batona ROCK ON!! Wear some gaiters, it'll cut down on...

    Summer Daze in the Pines

St Mary's was beat up in the spring. Fall down was wicked and trails were barely passable in spots. It was a total bushwhack, and with summer here I would say stay away until the undergrowth starts to die off in late fall or early winter.

    Summer Daze in the Pines

Stay away til the Falls Trail reopens. Still nice, Lake Jean is pretty and some other nice hiking spots, but without the Falls its an average wilderness. Maybe in Mid-August the Trail may reopen, check the website now and again, they post info on trail closures.

Where in the Dacks were you? I'll be going up to The Siamese Pond Wilderness this Fall. Beautiful hiking indeed.
