South Jersey: What are its boundaries?

Real south jersey is generally a function of traffic lights per square mile... last time i was in Brick, I think it failed the test! :) Having spent many years down by the Delaware Bay, it seems the multi-generation locals consider Cherry Hill to be north jersey!

    Millville Holly Orchard

Development proposals surface periodically like dead carp on this property. The latest was shot down, at least for now... IIRC, the original owner had quite a rep as a holly hybridizer, & the holly farm was quite an operation in its heyday.

    Expressway through the pines??

Now thats a great argument for building more roads... we need to create more edge habitat!

Manchester soil cleanup satisfies NRC, but not DEP

I had forgotten all about that place... did some field trials there some years back trying to identify plants & techniques for restoration of the site. Apparently, nothing worked! Definitely a moonscape. Did not realize the site was considered "radioactive" as a result of the mining...

    The Summit

Camden County hi-point Try this (may have to cut 'n paste the link): http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4407287&e=507546&s=48&size=l&datum=nad83 On the Burl. Co. line, but mostly in Cam. Co. We called this "Red Hill" as kids, & used to camp there. Couple of winters with good snow we...

Editorial: ORV Use in the Pine Barrens

driving the sand roads So from my reading of all this, I can no longer drive my car down a sand road unless it is posted that I can? Its been a while since I have been down there, but what about driving from Atsion to Batso? Or back to Martha? I realize this may be "old news", but its...

Trip to various spots in cape may and cumberland counties

All those roads used to have little bayside communities on them; the marshes behind the shore were all diked off & managed for salt hay farming. Upkeep & environmental regs ultimately killed 'em off, & PSE&G took the opportunity to use restoration of these areas as part of their nuke permit...

    artesian wells

There is/was an artesian well east of rte 9 near Barnegat... I recall driving out an old farm road towards the marsh, & next to an old shack was a vertical pipe about 2' high with water flowing out. Forget what brought me there, for all I know its been developed now. amf

List of Forges and Furnaces in S. Jersey

It could (and does) fill a book! Briefly, take a low pH, very sandy soil, add a fluctuating water table, place in a moist temperate zone & wait a while. Under low pH, the iron that is a large component of many soils in the east will precipitate out. In a very sandy soil, this iron will...

    Haines Bank Cave?

The "wall of coral" is / was a short ways downstream from Vincentown on the South Branch. At the time I visited it as part of a soils course field trip at Rutgers, it was accessed thru a farmers field from the first road to the left as you headed north out of town. Some years later I recall...

    Nature Conservancy Announcement

Lummis ponds are down in either Fairton or Lawrence Township (I forget which) in Cumberland County. Never heard it referred to as "cumberland forest".

    Haines Bank Cave?

Well I've browsed this forum in the past, but this post got me to register. "Caves", presumably dug holes in a riverbank, would seem to be a pretty unstable commodity in the area in question. However, there is a place where this may be possible. On the north bank of the S Branch of the...
