Park Ranger crashes into Atsion Lake

I think the speed limit around Atsion lake in Bass River State Park is 15mph. They might want to check the security cameras at New Gretna Liquors. :D

Flying Home Through the Pine Barrens

Nice picture. Thanks for sharing it, and congratulations on the pilot's license. That's quite an achievement for anybody, but especially so for a 17 year old. Your parents must have nerves of steel letting you take off in an airplane. When I was 17 my parents wouldn't let me buy an MG Midget...

    Pine Barren Exploring Trip

BTW, I can testify that bushwhacking is more risky than walking a trail. I was hiking on Sunday night (yes, in the dark) and I decided go "off trail" and take a short cut back to my truck (you should not attempt this without a GPS) I didn't see a branch protruding up from a downed tree and...

Father And Two Sons Die From Hypothermia While Hiking

BTW, speaking of hiking socks, I have several pairs of Smart Wool, which are good socks, but these are the most comfortable I have found. They don't get that gritty, sandpaper feel to them after they've been washed 20 times: http://runawaysstore.org/store/cabot_merino_wool_expelit_hiking_sock.html

Father And Two Sons Die From Hypothermia While Hiking

Thanks, 46er, that's good information about wool. I do wear sock liners on occassion, if it's really cold. But more often than not I wear them when it's hot instead of socks.

    Bugproof Pants

Hey, bug proof clothing was my idea! Those copyright bandits stole it! :D Actually, my idea is better than pre-treated permethrin clothes, but the science for it doesn't exist yet. I want want bug proof clothing that's made out of a material that prevents ticks & chiggers from being able to...

Father And Two Sons Die From Hypothermia While Hiking

When I howl like a wolf to the tune of Sinatra's "My way," while I'm hiking, that's odd, but wearing wool socks specifically tailored for hiking with sneakers is not odd. :D I'm a footwear minimalist. I cringe when I see people walking the pines in heavy boots. Trail running sneakers are all I...

Father And Two Sons Die From Hypothermia While Hiking

I have heard people argue both sides of that. Some think wool keeps you warm when it's wet, some don't. From my own experience I can say that wool is more resistant to absorbing water, it wicks moisture away from your body efficiently, and it is more comfortable than other fabrics, but today...

Father And Two Sons Die From Hypothermia While Hiking

Well, if you were already soaking wet, then you're not going to make it worse by stuffing wet leaves inside your clothing. I guess it's just a question of whether the small increase in insulation you get from the wet leaves is worth the loss in range of motion and the extra energy you'll expend...

5th Annual Winter Hang @ Batona Camp

You're going to need crampons to get up that mountain this year, Karl. :D Better bring the long johns with you too. They're predicting a low of 18 on Friday night and 17 on Saturday night. Might get snow on Friday too. I hiked 12 miles out there today and whew it was cold! If I'm in the area...

Father And Two Sons Die From Hypothermia While Hiking

Insulating your clothes with leaves, pine needles and lichen is a good way to preserve your body heat...but only if they're dry. If you're facing a potential hypothermia situation, you want to avoid getting wet at all costs. When your clothes get wet they lose 90% of their insulating ability.

Boyd, the comment I made, and to which you are referring, was light-hearted. There is no mention of politics and I'm not ranting about anything. Just waxing nostalgic for a time when Americans had more freedom and liberty. And, yes, I do find the loss of freedom and liberty troubling, and...

From the article: "A gun may help as a signal..." The forest service giving advice on how to use your gun when you get lost in the woods? You can tell that was written in 1946. Ahhh...for the good old days. BTW, a gun makes a good fire starter. http://www.grandpappy.info/hfire.htm

    Batona Trail Re-route

Good job, Al. Thanks for the report. It does get harder to hike as you get older, but you'd be surprised at what you can still do even at 80 years old if you eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. I've been on the summits of mountains that I hiked/rock climbed in my 20's & 30's that nearly...

Father And Two Sons Die From Hypothermia While Hiking

I have hiked out of Newfoundland Gap many times. It's a beautiful area, but in the winter it can be dangerous if you don't have layers of warm clothes and crampons for your feet to deal with the ice. I foolishly set out once on a round-trip hike from Newfoundland Gap to Charlies Bunion in a snow...
