Swimming beach @ Bass River SF closed due to poor water quality

Heavy rain? I had heard that water levels in that are of the pines were low? We will be camping at a private campground not far from Absegami tomorrow. I was hoping that the roads in Bass River wouldn't flooded, but it sounds like they might be?

    NY, New England Vacation Ideas?

It's probably farther than you want to drive but I'll vote for Maine. Just a few reasons why I like it there: Climate, Climate, Climate! Average high in August is 85-the nights stay cool enough to warrant sitting by a campfire or wearing a light long sleeve shirt until mid-July in the...

Bass River State Forest road questions

Only sometimes ;) I love that pic of him... Thanks-I was hoping that was the case. God willing this cool weather will stay with us too!

Bass River State Forest road questions

That's on the list-haven't taken a dip in cedar water in quite a while. What are the water levels like in that area in general? We haven't had a whole lot of rain up in NW Jersey but not sure what has been going on down south. Are we likely to encounter high water on some of the roads...

Bass River State Forest road questions

We're going to do a mix. We only have a limited amount of time so we want to cover a lot of ground by driving and hit a couple of "points of interest" where we'll get out on foot. Long story short is the three of us are attending a bachelor party in Atlantic City but are planning on bowing out...

    Revisiting the Shoemaker Farm

You're lucky then-apparently through the years they've both added and removed things for various reasons (trail closures, vandalism in certain areas, rerouting, etc...), so if you pick up a new set you'll have the best of both worlds.

    Revisiting the Shoemaker Farm

Another great resource (if you don't have them already) are the Kittatinny Ridge series of maps from the NY/NJ Trail Coalition. They show most old woods roads, whether open to vehicular traffic or not across Worthington State Forest, the DWG, Walpack WMA, Flatbrook-Roy WMA, Stokes, and High...

    Revisiting the Shoemaker Farm

The NPS has made a haphazard fits and starts (and ultimately "fits and stops") effort at figuring out what to do with the properties left as a legacy of the Tocks Island Dam debacle. Apparently they had allowed folks at one time to lease buildings and fix them up, but since there was never any...

Bass River State Forest road questions

I'll be camping with some friends in/near Bass River (Pilgrim Lake Campground) this weekend and want to do some exploring while we're there. I've been through Wharton a few times but never to Bass River. Boyd was kind enough to walk me through loading up my Garmin Nuvi with his maps so I'll be...

Regular old dashboard GPS (Garmin Nuvi 200) any good for pines navigation?

:p I had PMed Boyd earlier that for some reason the maps weren't playing nice with each other on my unit (or so I thought-turns out I was trying to run too many at once). Just as a public service I'm posting this here. BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN DELETING THINGS FROM THE UNIT AND ALWAYS BACK IT...

Regular old dashboard GPS (Garmin Nuvi 200) any good for pines navigation?

Thanks! I just got your NJ map uploaded and viewed it on the GPS-fantastic! I have the LIDAR map uploading now. Can't wait to try them out this weekend in Bass River SF.

Regular old dashboard GPS (Garmin Nuvi 200) any good for pines navigation?

First off, I downloaded the map and it's fantastic! Can't wait to try it out! Just a quick question-will I have to overwrite the regular road map that's already on there or should I get a memory card so that I can store both maps? I think I'll ultimately download the LIDAR map as well.

Wow! Guess I lucked out then! Downloading basecamp now.

Regular old dashboard GPS (Garmin Nuvi 200) any good for pines navigation?

My wife recently got a new GPS for her birthday. We had one (Garmin Nuvi 200) that we bought about four years ago, so that one is now relegated to me. Can these units be used for some of the more out of the way places in the pines such as Bass River SF and Wharton SF? I'm sure some of the...

    Camping near Atlantic City?

I decided to reserve a spot with Pilgrim Lake after chatting with the owner this morning. Sounds like a nice low-key place. No organized activities, nice clean 20 acre lake, and a natural setting. Plus hot showers which are included in the price of a tent site. I'll post a report afterwards...

    Camping near Atlantic City?

I didn't mean Bass River, I meant that this place is a private campground which seems to be surrounded by Bass River. I'll check out Arrowhead and Timberline too.

    Camping near Atlantic City?

Thanks for the suggestions-I found this place after doing some searching around. Looks like it's located within (or surrounded by) Bass River but is private? http://www.pilgrimlakecampgrounds.com/index.html Seems pretty no frills which is what we're looking for. Anyone know anything...

    Camping near Atlantic City?

This may sound like an odd question, but does anyone know of any good private campgrounds that offer primitive sites (all we need is a fresh water hydrant, a porta-john, and a firepit) within a half hour or so of Atlantic City? Some friends of mine are getting together in AC for a bachelor...

    Cow Tunnels Under Route 70

Since this thread has been resurrected I thought I'd mention that the cow tunnels under the Turnpike I posted about some years ago are indeed being widened along with the roadway. I was visiting my parents and happened to be driving through the area a few weeks ago.

    Old Mine Road open

I'll chime in since I tend to frequent the Gap/Stokes/Walpack much more than the pines these days. I know a guy who has a camper up at Bear Creek Campground (just down the road from the Walpack Inn) and he said the road to Blue Mountain Lake/Crater Lake really took a beating from Irene as 46er...
