Animal traps in trails behind Waretown lake

Looks like the MCCC (my alma mater-or at least the first one) biology department is trying to capture some critters for some kind of study. I suppose you could just call Ronald Smith and ask-he appears to be on the faculty there: http://www.mccc.edu/shp/shp.html

Is it possible to be immune to chiggers?

I hear a lot of talk of chiggers on here but I swear I've never gotten them, and I've done my share of bushwhacking that's for sure. I've been lit up by mosquitos plenty of times and I get poison ivy just by looking at it, but I've never had chiggers even after trudging through some truly nasty...

Possible Mountain Lion Sighting in Princeton

LOL... Bobcat definitely-I've not seen them myself, but there are definitely in Mercer County. Some of the problem is terminology-many people think when you say "Bobcat" you mean a large aggressive predator capable of taking down a full grown deer, not a small, reclusive cat that goes after...

Possible Mountain Lion Sighting in Princeton

Mt. Lucas Road is less than a mile away from congested, densely populated downtown Princeton. If a mountain lion was roaming around there we'd be hearing about pets mysteriously disappearing, joggers being attacked, or at the very least, dead hacked up deer laying around. People don't realize...

    Burlington Island a hidden treasure.

Jerseyman, once again my mind is blown. Was Robert Stacy by chance of the same Stacys who were involved with the founding of the City of Trenton?

    Music for the day

Those kids live up the road from me in Lebanon Township! Love the James McMurtry too-this is my favorite McMurtry tune:

It's not just the mudholes that can get you...

Yesterday I got up early and made a run to the county dump to get rid of some junk that had been hanging around the yard/in the garage. I had the dog with me so I thought I'd go check one of my local hunting spots, a small piece of WMA land (about 40 acres) about five minutes from home. It's...

Trip report: Pilgrim Lake Campground and Bass River SF exploring

The trails that I was on could only be dragged by truck as small as mine, or a quad ;)

Trip report: Pilgrim Lake Campground and Bass River SF exploring

Thanks for the info. You touched on what I was getting cranky about in my other thread-I don't get down to the pines nearly as much as I used to (I grew up near the pines but live north of Route 78 now) and it burns me that when I am able to get down there now and then, it's usually by myself...

    This ticks me off...

Guess I overreacted...getting old I suppose? GET OFF MY LAWN YOU DAMN KIDS!!! I wasn't trying to imply that the mud bogging was illegal-just dumb. Apparently they got the tickets for being in some kind of restricted area that they claim was not signed and that they won't disclose.

    Savoy Blvd construction

Generally the grade crossings are redone periodically for the benefit of the motorists traveling over them. The old Camden and Amboy crossing at South Broad Street in Yardville was notorious for throwing your car out of alignment and jarring your teeth out of your head until DOT redid it about...

    This ticks me off...

I post over on the Jersey forum of a Jeep site once in while just to see what people are up to/where they're going. The reason I got hooked into it in the first place was I stumbled across it while looking for information regarding unpaved roads up at Stokes/the DWG. I happened to go through a...

    "STOP IT"

She is well known to hunters in NJ as a lunatic and bear fanatic who makes a stink at practically every meeting of the Fish and Wildlife Council, has been charged with hunter harassment numerous times, as well as tampering with bear relocation traps placed by NJF&W.

    NJPB maps and outsiders?

I had a question from someone on a hiking forum about where I got the screenshots I posted of topographic maps of some areas in North Jersey. I deliberately did not mention NJPB maps because I didn't know the protocol-I just snapped screenshots, uploaded them to photobucket, and posted them...

    Just saying thanks

So tell us what you've found so far? I just spent a weekend in Bass River State Forest which aren't my usual stomping grounds and found some interesting places.

    Boyd's map legend question

As it turns out, I didn't "find" anything :D The pond is part of a farm that was annexed by High Point State Park back in the 1980s. The bridge is a man made bridge that carries a trail over it that eventually intersects with the Appalachian Trail. Interesting nonetheless!

Trip report: Pilgrim Lake Campground and Bass River SF exploring

Thanks-I had a good time writing it too. I read probably everything there is to read on this board about Calico/Calico Ridge before heading out there. If we just had more time we would have been able to explore the ridge a bit more-I agree about the topography-I think this is definitely my...

    Boyd's map legend question

Gotcha-I've been using your map along with NJPB maps to figure out a couple of roads up in High Point State Park that are interesting. They branch off of one of the major roads in the area (Deckertown Turnpike) and traverse the eastern slope of the Kittatinny Ridge, ending at a local road. One...

    Stuck

I've seen a lot of cars that have a screw-in doohicky that is stored in the trunk. You pop out a little plastic panel some where on the bumper and wa'la, there's a threaded hole to screw it into.

    Boyd's map legend question

Probably a stupid question, but can someone tell me the difference between these two roads? The paved road is outlined with the solid black line. The other road is outlined in solid beige/brown. I've been on the road outlined in solid black, and it is paved.
