Pine Barrens in for late season hurricane or big northeaster?

Fortunately I can see the road going out of town from my house, so I'll know if it's passable on foot. I won't attempt to walk through water if it's flooded. We're at mid-tide right now and the water has dropped back below the top of the bulkhead. Monday morning's high tide will probably be...

Pine Barrens in for late season hurricane or big northeaster?

Low tide is at 3:42pm tomorrow. My truck is parked three miles offshore. If that storm is still making a B-line for me and they're still predicting a storm surge of potentially 10 feet, travel ban or no travel ban I'm going for my truck and heading inland to relatives. Better to risk ending up...

Pine Barrens in for late season hurricane or big northeaster?

They just said on WOND 1400am - Atlantic City that a travel ban goes into effect at 12:00am tonight. Anyone caught on the road will be arrested. They also said we could get a 10' storm surge tomorrow. If that much water comes in with some force behind it, that could bring my house down. :(

Pine Barrens in for late season hurricane or big northeaster?

I don't think there's going to be much of a problem until tomorrow night. That's when it's supposed to come ashore. I don't expect I'll get much sleep Monday night. But even if we lose power, I'll still have more conveniences available to me when than when I go backpacking. I'll have a roof over...

Pine Barrens in for late season hurricane or big northeaster?

Ludlam Bay is about 100 yards from my front door and a man made canal is about 10 feet from my back door. The streets are already flooded and this storm is still more than 500 miles away. :( There is a reason I don't want to evacuate my home that I don't want to broadcast on a public form. If it...

Pine Barrens in for late season hurricane or big northeaster?

I live ten feet from the bay. I evacuated for Irene last summer, but I'm going to ride this one out. I have been in two Cat 1 hurricanes. 80mph winds aren't going to bring the house down, and Sandy's winds probably won't even be that strong. Sure, I have some concerns about the water, but...

    Chatsworth Lake Boat Access?

Thanks everyone for your input. Looking at the lake from the road, in the northwest corner there is a sandy beach-like area. I was hoping somebody might know a way back there. The only access road I can find is private. There has to be pickerel in that lake, but there is also plenty of...

When's a good time to avoid snakes

Snakes do hibernate in the winter, so it's pretty unlikely you'll see one but, on occasion, if we get a warm spell during winter and the temperature starts climbing up into the 60's, they might venture out of their den. Most of the snakes I run into usually scurry away or freeze in their tracks...

Does anybody know of a location to launch a boat on Chatsworth Lake?

Buzzard Hill Road Accident (Pakim Pond area)

Holy cow, 170mph on a motorcycle! When gas shot up to $4 a gallon in 2008, I seriously thought about buying a bike. Then the following week there were two separate motorcycle accidents, one of which I witnessed. Both riders were struck by cars and killed, and they weren't doing anything wrong...

    Fall trout stocking

Shoot, I missed this! Does it say when the trout season opens in the fall? Usually they make you wait a week after they stock a lake.

You're only as old as you feel. Unfortunately, I feel like petrified wood (this is a family BB, no pun intended ;))

Great News If You're A Pine Barrens Hiker

I shot at it and missed, but an oil well gushed up out of the ground in my back yard. Now I'm a millionaire and me, Granny, Jethro and Elle May are moving to Beverly Hills. lol :D

Yeah, that stuff works good, and if I wear baggy pants you can hardly notice the tail I have grown from using it. :D

Great News If You're A Pine Barrens Hiker

Yeah, I can't say with 100% certainty that the chiggers are gone everywhere. As far as the ticks, unfortunately they never go away. They just become less active and less likey to get on you when it gets cold. It's supposed to be in the 70's this week, so the ticks will be very active in that...

Great News If You're A Pine Barrens Hiker

I haven't hiked the new section yet, but I'm looking forward to the detour around the paved road and the dirt road. I thought about doing that section yesterday, but I only needed to do a Carranza to Quaker Bridge hike to complete my 85th end-to-end hike of the Batona Trail (set a goal 9 years...

Great News If You're A Pine Barrens Hiker

I'm going to have to figure out how to post pictures. I didn't take any pictures on the Batona Trail yesterday, but I took a few neat looking shots of a racoon on my back porch a few nights ago.
