Buzzard Hill Road Accident (Pakim Pond area)

Wow, that's awful. It's hard to look at the picture of the girl who died holding her baby. I have seen guys on those bikes go flying so fast down a fire line I can't even tell what color clothes they're wearing. Whenever I see somebody zip by me on a bike in the woods, I always think to myself ...

    Culture of the Pinelands

I had so much to eat at the Jamboree today I overheard a kid say to his mother, "Hey mom, what did the Hindenburg look like?" She pointed at me and said, "Like that." :D

    Pine Barrens Jamboree

I usually make this event every year. I got there about 80 minutes before it closed and proceeded to chow down on gourmet cupcakes, kettlecorn, and a sandwich from Lucille's. I could have used a rickshaw to take me back to my truck. :D

Great News If You're A Pine Barrens Hiker

When it's late July in the pines and 20 deer flies are circling my head, gnats are diving into my eyes, sweat is rolling down my cheeks and I'm avoiding stepping on weeds like they're land mines because I know any one of them could be housing a hundred chiggers hoping to dine on me for lunch, I...

Great News If You're A Pine Barrens Hiker

I put a bug bomb in my truck once to kill chiggers. Then I spent the next half hour trying to calm passersby who thought that my truck was on fire. Man, you should have seen all the white smoke pouring out of it. Word quickly spread throughout the chigger kingdom to stay the hell out of my truck! :D

    Menantico Ponds

Wait...I don't want to cramp your style! Maybe your vernacular fits today's culture perfectly? I don't know what's going on out there in the culture today. I live in a cocoon. I don't watch much TV. In fact, the last TV series I followed was M*A*S*H*. I hang around with people who have little...

    Menantico Ponds

Looks good, PW (can I call you PW? :D) Nice pictures, good descriptions. I did notice two typos in the second to the last paragraph. You said: (Me likely the crystal clear water) I think you meant, "Me like the crystal clear water?" You said: I then parked the car to yonder. "yonder" should be...

    Menantico Ponds

It's true. There are some strange people who hang around Menantico Sand Ponds. I go there. :D There were some burglaries years ago when the vehicles of fishermen were broken into while they were out on one of the ponds fishing but, according to the Park policeman I spoke to, he said the few...

    Lower Forge camping

Adam, unless you hire a team of Sherpas or a herd of llamas, kayak karl is right, you're a car camper, not a backpacker. Another suggestion for you would be to camp out at one of the state parks like Bass River. You can rent a primitive wilderness campsite for $20 a nite. If my memory serves...

Corned beef hash...YES! I only backpack in cooler weather and it is a tradition to always have corned beef hash for breakfast. There's nothing like firing up my little pocket rocket backpacking stove on a chilly morning and hearing the sizzle in the pan and inhaling that marvelous comfort food...

    Could Use Some Help

Chiggers are dormant when the temperature is in the 40's & 50's, and they're history for the season after the first frost. I can only recall one time I got a tick on me in temperatures below 40. For the most part the ticks are pretty dormant in temperatures below 50 and they really don't start...

    Could Use Some Help

No masks, but after the second time they beat me up they were kind enough to share the short cut they used to get ahead of me. I used that short cut the next time I hiked that trail, but unfortunately I stepped on a bear trap somebody must have accidentally dropped. :D
