    Strange Weather Pattern

Here in Southampton Twp it was very localized - pouring in buckets in one place and sprinkle a half mile away. All this rain - wettest June on record, regular evening thunderstorms in July - raising Cain with Ro and my botanical monitoring of a site on Parker Preserve. Site (an old borrow pit)...

    NY, New England Vacation Ideas?

Wanted to throw in another suggestion. We just got back from a great 3 day trip to Dolly Sods Wilderness in West by God Virginia. Part of the Monongahela National Forest. Room (very nice) at Canaan Valley Motel at $60 per nite with nearby food places ranging from passable to excellent. Sods...

    Hampton Furnace Area Excavation

What we saw triggered my earlier comment about the FBI's failed Hoffa search in Michigan. Who/what were "they" digging for? And why NOTHING in the papers or TV despite the signs/cones being up for about a week, maybe more. Interesting.

    One Sweet Bog

Great pictures! The unbelievable number of flowering water lilies emniscent of the southern reservoir at Whitesbog but the trees look too big.

    Just say No!!!

Last night near midnight coming up 679/563/72/4 Mile Road from mothing at Forsythe NWR we counted 13 deer on road edges, in ones and twos, including 2 bucks. Luckily none decided it needed to cross the road with zilch traffic. Going 30 to avoid sudden deer crossings was out of the question.....

Does anyone know what this "free floating" species is?

Mystery solved. There was a short period when the water level in this borrow pit went down, the plants rooted, and we were able to determine that they are Eleocharis, species not identified.

    Coleman's Bridge Trail

Just had to post and share a huge disappointment. This morning Ro and I took a neighbor out to the Rancocas Conservancy's Coleman's Bridge trail to see/photograph plants known to be there. Lespediza (cuneata?, asian invasive) and an invasive, alien grass, have completely swamped the trail and...

    Hampton Furnace Area Excavation

This morning on our way south on US 206 we saw that the signs and traffic cones were gone that all last week blocked the entrance to Hampton Road. The signs restricted passage to official vehicles only. So we turned in Hampton Road. Badly rutted and many water holes. At Hampton Furnace the...

    Just say No!!!

When we lived on 1134 Smithville in Springfield Twp, Burlco, in 27 years the tally was 2 Chevies and one Olds, all within a mile of the house. Begone, rodents of the forest!

    Capewell Glass Negative Collection

A comment I made some time ago elsewhere: I have pictures of my father and cousin/Godfather, flyfishing in upstate NY in the '20's and early 30's: cap, white shirts and ties, suits with vests, and knee high rubber boots. Also, some of the pictures of the old days floating around on the web show...

Favorite place in the Pine Barrens

A tie between Parker Preserve and Whitesbog. Note that the purple area in the precipitation map looks to be right around Chatsworth. Our one botany test area on Parker has more water than after Sep 2012 deluge. Many plants under water and I wonder if we'll get to see them bloom/seed.

    Owl Rescue at Parker Preserve

Sad news. Dr. Emil DeVito of NJCF said Woodford animal hospital had been unable to rejuvenate the owl we brought in, it'd been too emaciated.

    Mowing

Today we came north on South Park Road from Route 532. South of the farmstead on the east side of the road, both shoulders had been mowed very close to the ground for quite some distance. Why???? We were looking to see what might be coming up at a couple of wet spots, but they'd been mowed...

    NJ DOT Local Names List

Also note that Slabtown - Jacksonville, and Hog Wallow - Mt. Laurel, both Burlington County, are missing. Maybe this column should accumulate suggested additions/changes, and send the result into to the DoT?

    Owl Rescue at Parker Preserve

This morning Ro, her son Jim, and I went to Parker Preserve to monitor our two botany test sites. While there Ro spotted a great horned owl sitting on a hummock in a bog near the dike road; it appeared sick or hurt. There were feathers around it. We called Dr. Emil De Vito, Manager Natural...

    Botany

Ro & I checked out "the" Isotria verticillata site yesterday on our way back from inventorying our Parker sites. No blooms, at least one plant with what looked like a full seed pod, several healthy looking plants, lots of little ones. Hope this site stays undisturbed.

    Bayside NJ

Last Sunday Ro & I wandered back roads out to several NJ Delaware Bay shore points. At what the DeLorme map says was Bayside (a different note says Caviar) there were a ton of worn pilings indicating a large building out over the water. Old aerial pix on the web show the Southern RR of NJ/Jersey...
