    High Spots Today

So what's your impression of what this was? Indeed part of a very old bog? The channels are interesting.

    Blind Boat And A Blind

The first image in this thread reminded me how awesome Bird's Eye View (45 degree oblique low-altitude aerial photography) was in Live/Bing Maps, more than a decade ago. It looks like the feature is still in the product, but the coverage has been dramatically reduced. Is there anywhere in or...

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

I will certainly support demarcating and/or barricading ponds, spungs, fields, wetlands...anything that is plainly not part of any road. Those areas are no place for vehicles. Step up enforcement and bring heavy penalties on those who continue to ignore such barricades.

    Military Fox Hole

What's that mean, exactly - they're natural features?

    Military Fox Hole

Wondering about these as well, a little bit to the east.

    The rectangular thing

Maybe they floated the lumber down the creek and built it onsite? You're right though, it's really remote for seemingly no reason.

    Fries Mill

I've just realized that the article I linked is the second in a series. The first one is also available from the Library of Congress and is even better from a historical perspective. The article describes a clubhouse used as a hunting retreat by sportsmen from Philadelphia, on the east side of...

    Military Fox Hole

Far too "sphincter tightening" for my vehicle, to borrow your expression, and my adventures are generally limited to the weekend, but interested to see what you find.

    Fries Mill

An update! I recently reached out to the Maurice River Township Heritage Society regarding the history of Fries Mill. Specifically, I was wondering if they might have copies of the maps used to create that information sign. While they did not have those, I received a very friendly response and...

Here are those maps from the sign, perspective-corrected and in much higher resolution, in case anyone is interested in them.

    Fries Mill

I am sure your information and experience is more accurate than mine, I would defer to you. Honestly I am still confused on which location is really "Potter's Cabin" and which one is the "Fries Mill Tavern," or if they are even distinct structures. I am not sure where the name "Potter" has come...

    Finding an Old Book

For Christmas, a family member gifted me a copy of Place Names (the 1955 book) signed by Bisbee just a few days before your copy. It looks like he was giving out Christmas gifts as well in '55. It's not Sign Posts, but I am very happy to have this. The search continues...

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

Just to refresh, this is the wording that was used in the first press release, last August: This very much read to me as if the permit system is a foregone conclusion ("the State Park Service will develop a permit system" - emphasis mine) and that the purpose of the survey is not to discuss...

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

NJAC §7:2-3.4(e): Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, and I don't know the full legal definitions of terms like "rally" and "exhibition," but this seems relevant. "Person or organization" sounds fairly broad.

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

I am genuinely as open-minded about this as I can be, but doesn't this illustrate that a permit system isn't needed? This is already illegal activity (presumably this group would have needed to request and be issued a Special Use Permit for a large gathering like this). Park Police could issue...

    Fries Mill

Just after Christmas, I headed way down south to several sites on the Delaware Bay for photos. On the way back, I stopped in Cumberland to finally check out the ruins of Fries Mill. On the walk along the tracks out to the old carriage road there were some people in front of me, including some...

    Chatsworth Cemetery

I was trying to find the article mentioned here since I figured it would have some backstory on who he was, but I don't see any threads or front-page articles called "Vanishing Breed" here, and a general Internet search didn't turn up anything, either.

    Chatsworth Cemetery

A more hopeful way of looking at it is that his days in the woods have continued! I have not been to that "lake" you mentioned in your 2008 thread, but I hope it's been successfully protected from vehicular damage since then.
