Seeking historical background on lower Mullica river life, mid-18th century

Ah, I was completely confused here. Thanks for making me stop and think about it. Great Egg Harbor river is behind Ocean City. Funny, it looks smaller on the map than the Little Egg Harbor River. Do you happen to know about when the name "Mullica" came to refer to the river? Was that a 19th...

Seeking historical background on lower Mullica river life, mid-18th century

I haven't seen the "Down Jersey" book. I'll have a look for that. Thanks for the tip :). I'm all over Beck, and he provides some good color and the occasional nugget of fact, but his books are long on anecdote, quite rambling with information scattered throughout, and his geography is often so...

Seeking historical background on lower Mullica river life, mid-18th century

It wouldn't be my first ~$100 history book (smiles in Jerseyman's general direction). I'll have a look around for a decent copy. One thing that's already driving me nuts is place names, which always seems to be the case when researching the past. As far as I can tell the bay may be called Egg...

Seeking historical background on lower Mullica river life, mid-18th century

That's good color. The first settlers up the river were Scotch Quakers, right? They established themselves at The Forks in the late 1600's if the sources I've found are correct. I don't know what the first industries were, but I assume cedar cutting and related woodcrafts, and later...

Seeking historical background on lower Mullica river life, mid-18th century

Heart of the Pines... is that Pearce? If so I don't think I can afford it :). Was James Clarke any relation to Elijzh Clark, who supposedly paid for the fort at Fox Burrow along with Wescoat? My project is fiction, so my obligation is to get as close as possible, but I can fudge what I don't...

Seeking historical background on lower Mullica river life, mid-18th century

No, the one I have is "Absegami: Annals of Eyren Haven and Atlantic City 1609-1904" by Heston, but just Vol. 2. "Absegami Yesteryear" seems to be available used, but I didn't see any descriptions. Does it cover the right period?

Seeking historical background on lower Mullica river life, mid-18th century

Hey guys. For a current project I am trying to find historical sources for life on the lower Mullica in the mid-18th century through the close of the Revolution. Specifically I am interested in the towns of Chestnut Neck, Leed's Point, The Forks, but also more generally the entire economic...

Historic Preservation in Wharton State Forest: A Lost Cause?

Does the state favor ecology over history? It could be, I suppose. But it could also be that any policy that leads to a failure to preserve history in these locations would end up looking like a policy in favor of ecology. History is expensive to preserve, whereas I think ecology will take care...

Dear Pine Barrens: Cloud People exist.

I never know what I'm going to find when I read these boards. This easily tops the strangeness list. Well done!

    Places like Apple Pie Hill

Amatol has much of the same character, and there is quite a bit to see back in the woods there. There's also that terra cotta pipe plant up off Woodmansie. I should be able to remember the name but it isn't coming to me right now. Begins with a B. Old Halfway is worth a stop and you can clamber...

Trains found underwater off of NJ coast

I tried to watch it, but it keeps timing out trying to buffer. And I'm a Comcast subscriber. Netflix streaming eats their lunch. But anyway, two things Al mentioned... sand on the bottom is pretty silty and the top layers are water saturated. Stirs up very easily, but if you press down into it...

    Old pictures of America

Yes, those large format cameras, Hasselblads and such, take amazing photos. It makes sense that if you focus a certain amount of light onto a 3" x 5" frame vs. a 35mm frame you're going to be able to capture a lot more detail with a certain grain size.

    Old pictures of America

My dad sent me this, and I thought you guys might get a kick out of it. Most images seem to be from the late 19th century through about 1940 or so. http://www.mindjunker.com/photography/the-lost-america.html/

Whats going on at hawkins bridge?

I hadn't heard about that. Sad. The woods are no place to be during high winds, and at 60 mph I most definitely would have packed up and gotten the hell out of there.

Congrats, man. He'll be carrying your pack in about twelve years :).

Christmas along The Old Mine Road

Awesome, Ben. There's my answer to the question I asked you in my PM :). You'll have to come up again when I can take a day and I'll guide you around some of the less accessible, out of the way spots.

    Get ready for Phase 2

I avoid the turnpike and the parkway like I avoid baked squash at Christmas.
