Hello - journalist looking for your craziest (or just best) Pine Barrens stories here!

Well-written piece, and entertaining. Obviously works the sensational angle that seems to be the first thing that strikes people from the city when the hear about the barrens. I got a laugh out of the paranormal dudes. They don't have much imagination, if the best places they can think of for...

Bog Iron: Can You Dig it, or What is the Marl of the Story?

Ha, that is very cool. Thanks for posting the pics. We used to hunt geodes in creek beds when I lived in upstate NY, but I had never heard of the ironstone variety.

    Buzby's is up for sale.....

According to the listing there are three bedrooms and a couple baths. If you could live above it that would make owning the store a much more viable proposition.

    Buzby's is up for sale.....

If the capital requirements are low and you can support the debt, then no reason why you couldn't own it for the personal satisfaction, and set up and sell your prints and whatnot inside. I suspect Marilyn paid as much into that place as she ever took out of it in monthly cash flow.

Bog Iron: Can You Dig it, or What is the Marl of the Story?

Thanks for the additional info, Mark. So, have you ever seen an example such as that which the author implies exists: something like a petrified tree stump composed of iron oxide?

    Buzby's is up for sale.....

It's a romantic notion, but I wouldn't underestimate the challenge of making any money on a place like that. Depends on the initial capital investment and debt costs, naturally. It's small, it doesn't have much parking, and other than on certain festival days tourist traffic is fairly light.

Bog Iron: Can You Dig it, or What is the Marl of the Story?

That makes more sense to me, Jerseyman. Shallow pits with irregular walls would not be anywhere near as stand-out visible as a regular grid of square diggings.

Bog Iron: Can You Dig it, or What is the Marl of the Story?

Neat! I can't really get the whole picture, though. Was it cut out in the shape of a square as described in Jerseyman's post?

Bog Iron: Can You Dig it, or What is the Marl of the Story?

I spent an hour looking at various aerials and satellite imagery, but it's just too easy to engage in wishful seeing. Artifacts in raster images often have regular features, which makes it difficult to assert that the few possibles I spotted were real features of the landscape. If these tanks...

Bog Iron: Can You Dig it, or What is the Marl of the Story?

Fascinating stuff, Jerseyman. >> The process is so active that stumps and trunks of trees lose all their vegetable matter and are converted into solid iron ore with every line and feature perfectly preserved. Is this true? If so, does anyone know of an existing example? Something else that...

Possibly rabid beavers bite 3 in Phila. parks

You've always got to watch out for infected beavers.

    Jersey Sore

The last data I saw suggest that we're losing about 50k residents per year, so you guys can just wait it out :).

    Jersey Sore

I may do a second slideshow at some point, but rather than use my own images I'll solicit images from others. There are some pretty big holes in what I have. I don't have any shots of the midlands, the Hunt Country, or the shore (that are good enough to post).

    Jersey Sore

Thanks a bunch for the pingback, Ben. And thanks to the rest of y'all for the compliments. I really feel like our state is the star here. All I do is point my autofocus here and there :).

    Jersey Sore

Yeah, I don't much care if they visit either, as long as they don't trash the state :).

    Jersey Sore

Thanks, Piney. I solved a couple of the FF/IE issues, but there are one or two remaining. Stuff drives me batty :).

    Jersey Sore

Thought you guys might enjoy this post and related slideshow on my blog. I've been working on assembling the images for awhile. It's sort of my response to the popularity of Jersey Shore and all the Jersey-hating I see in the media and on Internet forums. If you see any errors in the...

    Look, up in the sky....

You know, I love the Angels and the Thunderbirds, and have seen both teams probably four or five times, but for an aviation buff it might just be the case that the Millville show will be a lot more pleasant to attend now that they're out of the lineup. I bet there will be far fewer people...

Mystery of the Canadian Whisky Fungus

Very interesting article, although I was disappointed that there wasn't some high tech solution to the distiller's problem at the end :).
